We watched them set up the big-top out on old man Neuman's field that afternoon. We ran in and out among the elephants, and ... I don't know how the others felt about it, but I was so thrilled that the circus had decided to come to our town — my town — for one summer's weekend. I spent the whole night dreaming about the two days to come. But it rained Saturday. There was no circus that day even though the clowns and the animals were still there. I know they were there because I walked through the mud-field to see how things were.
