the institution ... 16 I had allowed myself to forget how the circus had come to my town one summer when I was young. Things were different then — I had been so excited. It was a Friday afternoon when the animal-wagons pulled their way through the main street of our town — just a little after lunch. We all chased each other in the dust of the wagons, and we roared and hollered and trumpeted trying to mimic the animals as best we could. I know they were there because I walked through the mud-field to see how things were. I can remember seeing our bicycle-clown sitting alone inside one of the tents. the experience...130 the communiversity . . . 158 How long are you staying? I interrupted. I wasn't sure if he heard me as he remained silent, so I asked him again, Will you be staying an extra day? He did not answer my question but only said. Sunday will be a better day.' (At first I thought he had said some day would be a better day. but I guess I had just misunderstood.) I asked him how he knew this and he said that it was simply so. the people...179 But how long? I implored. Long enough — but not really long enough... he told me. I couldn't really understand why he spoke this way so I tugged on his costume sleeve, asking, How long is long enough? You see. it's like anything In life that is worthwhile — it must be impressive enough to shape a lasting memory, but not so fleeting as to become merely another forgotten dream. And he looked at me from behind his grease-paint smile. table ot contents ... is
