Linda Deanne Harrold 136 seniors Suzanne Harvey Many people have been a part of my life since I entered Marlborough in seventh grade. They have not only been friends. but also an integral part of my education. Some of these people left Marlborough earlier: others remain far away in other places and other countries. Many are present students at Marlborough. These special friends include several exceptional teachers who have opened my eyes to many things. Muchisimas gracias y un abrazo grande. My family have also been teachers, with their care and support. To all my friends: Thank you for all the great times and just being you! I bid you Godspeed, and best wishes. I love you. Everything has its beauty but not everybody sees it. -Confucius oz? When I was a toddler, I walked to the beach and found all of my dreams in the infinite number of sand grains. Greedily, I gathered as many as I could hold and stuffed several handfuls into my pockets until the sand brimmed over from my trousers. As I trudged home, very encumbered by the weighty load, I noticed a figure down the coast a little ways. Strange as it seemed, the form looked like a giant heart pumping and pumping its way toward me, and as it drew near I saw that it was indeed just that. lt had a few scars, but all the same it was a very healthy heart. It asked very politely if it might help me carry my obvious load, but I explained that I didn't need any help. This abundance of sand I will soon construct into a palace, it will be my utopia, I told it. Although there was something extremely familiar about the heart that made me want to talk with it longer, I hurriedly said goodbye, as I was pressed for time. Not too much later, I encountered two other rare figures, the kind you are very unlikely to meet up with. One was simply a bright star, smiling, with a deep concern in its eyes, and the other was a giant blue whale embeached on the sand, They too offered their help in carrying the precious cargo but, as with the heart, I told them that I could manage. Looking down at my pockets to assure myself it was still there, I was horrified to discover that more than half of the grains had slipped out through an apparent hole in the fabric. Then the whale, with a great sympathy, said, You know, that's very slippery sand you're holding. However, some of the grains are durable while others are weak and insignificant. Hours later, the sun having long since set, I decided to run the remaining distance home. Finally, gasping for breath, I arrived safely home. As I ascended the stairs, suddenly I remembered the sand. At my sides I felt empty pockets and hands and sadly concluded that my palace would never be realized, In an instant, I thought of what the whale had said of the grains - how some were weak, but others were strong. Undoubtedly the few that now stuck to my pockets were the durable ones that would build, at the least, a base for my palace. These were the vital ones, the ones that would make building the palace worthwhile, Next day, when I went back to the beach to collect sand for other parts of my creation, I found the heart, the star, and the whale all waiting for me. After they offered to help construct the base of my utopia, I gratefully accepted: so right there on the beach we began its plans. Today, twelve years later, l'm still working hard on this home, but I feel that when it's done, living there will be worth all of the effort.
