THE LEAVES OF LIFE KEEP FALLING ONE BY ONE There comes a time when a departure must be made from a way of life to one that is different; unknown; even frightening. The Senior Class of 1966 was the first of its kind to experience its entire four years in the Marlborough High School building on Union Street. Yet, with one quick handshake and a neat diploma, this period is finished—terminated in favor of a totally new life. The purpose of this yearbook is to recapture the memories of that life— a life, as the cliche goes, that is gone, but definitely not forgotten. And for the members of that class, nothing is more desirable. IN MEMORIAM MRS. BERTHE GAUTHIER Mrs. Gauthier will always hold a special place in the memori es of the Class of 1966. She was well-loved by all of us and was willing to devote herself unsparingly to the needs of her pupils. She worked faithfully as a teacher, counselor, and friend. Under her guidance our years spent with her were happy and profitable. Marl¬ boro High will miss a fine teacher and a loyal friend. 2 FIDELIS DEDICATED . . . MR. JAMES G. HONEN . . . EDUCATOR . . . The re is no doubt that for many it has been a long and enduring judging from what I am told by those more experienced than I, it can be safely assumed that upon conclusion of yet another twenty or thirty years, we shall reflect upon the course of our lives and unanimously conclude that the duration of years spent in grade school, high school, and for some, college, was, in fact, the most carefree and least troublesome portion of our lives.” PAUL WILLIAM SHAPIRO— Our Youth—Its Pressures and Anticipations” The thoughts of everyone seem to be changing. To recognize that, there is an ever-increasing pressure on teenagers today . . . He must get good marks . . . the areas of specialization descend on him at the age of fourteen and below. He must choose a commercial education, vocational, or a college bound course of studies. By the age of sixteen, it is almost too late for a child to decide his future .. . the immediate pressures of education, but there is one, all enftmpassing yet less controllable .. . ' I feel the greatest pressure on is teenagers today is that we know we are going to be cut short of the peaceful life we’ve always experienced in the past.’ ” KATHLEEN BARBARA HANLEY— Reminiscences” This is an important occasion for our class. It marks the last time we will all be together as members of the Senior class . . . This day will bring to an end four years filled with happiness and sadness, hope and despair, victory and defeat, a wide gamut of student thinking and developing toward the mysterious future. In these four years of progress, the class of 1966 has seen many changes in the world and in the school, but most of all in themselves, each and every one.” 120 JOHN WILLIAM USINAS— Vocational Education—Today and Tomorrow” The future for a young man who has a definite skill is unlimited. His earning power is limited only by the amount of work he wishes to do. Through the education that we have received at the vocational school we are leaving the school with a high degree of proficiency in a given field. Thus, our chances of success depend entirely upon ourselves and our atti¬ tudes. The school has done its part, we must do the rest.” NANCY MARION BARRETT— Fine Arts—A Reflection of a Culture” When a man loses contact with the rest of humanity, the line of communication be¬ tween him and his audience is broken and he has no basis for reflection . . . the artist, the musician, the fine artist cannot divorce himself from the technology and the mechanics and the scientific materialism. Although this materialsm is not enough to complete a civilization, it is definitely a very large part of us and must be reflected in what we do, think, paint, and play. Nor can the artist divorce himself from the traditional. We must build upon the knowledge and experiences of the past. They are the foundations of our culture but we must manifest, our own personality.” ALISON LEE GRICE— Youth and Its Adjustment to Maturity” “These people who have labored so diligently and so patiently to awaken our stubborn minds are our parents and teachers. They are the poor human beings whom we have grumbled about and rebelled against. They are the ones who have preached to us of morality and good behavior, the ones who have bored us with grammar, philosophy, and important events in history, flunked us in math, and made us ' sweat out’ biology classes. They are the ones who tell us to cut our. long hair, dress properly, and come home early. But, most of all, they are the individuals who have shaped our lives and made us what we are today.” 121 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of 1966, being of our usual unsound minds, do hereby bequeath to those both past and present the following articles and memories: LEAVES: TO: W.
