U.S.S. MARKAB (AR-23) 1964-1965 Westpac The time c;ime once again for us to fulfill our mission of support to the Seventh Fleet. V ' e deployed 18 June 1964 to help other ships in action by repairing everything from typewriters to boilers. We can do it, too. On the IMARKAB we have approximately five hundred and fifty oflScers and men of thirty-four ratings that keep thirty-five different shops operating. That ' s a lot of potential to keep in a ship 491 feet in overall length and 70 feet abeam. The cruise took us to Hawaii: Yokosuka. .Japan; Buckner Bay, Okinawa; Subic Bay, P.L; and Hong Kong. We h;:d a little time to play, go sight-seeing and much work. Most of the time there was quite a bit work to do and, since we ' re a working ship, that ' s what we did. We ' re proud of our ship and crew. They put out a lot of repairs. Just in case ynu don ' t know what a repair ship does, let me start out by introducing you to the men and their jobs.
