Dancing Under the Stars On December 10 from 8-12 p.m., the Mark Keppel Girls League sponsored Wishing on a Star, this year ' s annual Christmas Ball. The four hours at the ball, were only the culmination of weeks of preparation by Girls League — who had the task of selecting the six princesses, counting the votes, decorating the gym, hir- ing Disc Jockeys and then finally, working at the dance Itself. The gym was expertly decorated by Girls League in the theme Wishing on a Star. Keeping in tune with the festive Christmas cheer and Keppel ' s school spirit, the gym was decorated with red and white streamers, stars, elves, a REAL Santa Claus, and an abundance of refreshments, smiles, and good cheer. The ball provided a very wintery and festive atmosphere. Music was provided by Fun Boy Productions, owned and operated by two seniors here at Keppel, Jeff Smith and Hiro Shimizu. They collectively played and mixed a variety of pop, rock, soul, and just plain top forty mu- sic. Participation in Varsity Basketball by two of the princesses cause a delay in the coronation ceremony. For the first time the coronation proceeds were de- layed to 1 1:00 p.m. At that magical moment, CONNIE VASQUEZ was crowned the nineteen hundred and eighty three Christmas Ball queen. Along with Queen Vasquez were senior princesses TERRI YOSHIZUMI and VIRGINIA SANCHEZ; junior princess, NORA MATSUMOTO; sophomore pnncess, LUZ-MARIA QUINTANA; and freshman princess. KATHY SAD- ZEWICZ. After the crowning, the song from which the theme was named was played as the princesses and their escorts shared a special dance and a very spe- cial moment. The expected turnout was well han- dled by Girls ' League advisors Susan Sanchez and Ginger Stonebreaker and by President Donna Menard. All three played major roles in the smooth run- ning of the 1983 Christmas Ball, a night that will be remembered when ■WISHING ON A STAR. Entertainment 84 This year, our students found satisfaction in both modern and traditional trends. As seen, a diversity of taste was present as each individual choose the next step into tomor- row ' s fads. The musical preference was as diverse as our racial mixture here at Keppel. Groups with the electronic, computeristic beat like MIDNIGHT STAR achieved popularity with the hit Freakazoid. Conventional rock stayed popular with groups like QUIET RIOT, MOTLEY CRUE, JOURNEY and the POLICE. The POLICE hit the top of the charts in 1983 with Every Step You Take and it now reigns as the top song. Pop and Soul remained as popular as ever with groups like: DeBarge, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie, the Romantics, Yes, David Bowie, and Bonnie Tyler. Aside from the rest, the most unprecedented performer was MICHAEL JACKSON with his history making, hit album THRILLER. A whopping 6 hits from the single album rocket- ed to the top 10: Beat It , Billy Jean , Thriller , PYT , Human Nature , and Wanna Be Startin ' Somethin ' . Michael also swept every award in the music industry; 6 American Music Awards, and a record set- ting 12 Grammy nominations. 1983-1984 will surely be remembered as the year of MI- CHAEL JACKSON. Another new phenomenon was a new type of dancing which had originated from N.Y. gangs. POPPING and FLOOR-BREAK- ING. This is said to be America ' s contribution to modern dance. MTV and other various video shows brought popularity to the music video. Mi- chael Jackson videos, of course, led the way for other videos. Other popular videos were, LIO- NEL RICHIE ' S All Night Long , PO- LICE ' S Wrapped Around Your Finger , YES ' S Owner of a Lonely Heart , DAVID BOWIE ' S China Girl , SPANDAU BAL- LET ' S Gold , just to name a few. The movie industry was led by both new and old actors in movies such as Terms of Endearment , Silkwood , Flashdance , Foot- loose , Scarface , Yentl , and Risky Business . The private take-outs, Pepe ' s, the Hat, E! Loco ' s, Belly Buster and Beef Bowl consumed much Keppel business. As for fads, the hands-off winner was the Cabbage Patch Kids. The Cabbage Patch craze picked up around Christmas and slowly died after the seasons rush. As for cars, the status quo remained expensive. As one can see the tastes here at Keppel always have and always will remain diversified. DdJia Shlitey MacLalne Jeck Nidialson ijyjaiocMEToa«a3»«i ' COMETOTIBMS. Jimmy Kingman 30 Fads
