Coming Home Homecoming What does one have to do to become Homecoming Queen? All girls entering the contest are screened by student council representatives and football players. Six are appointed candidates for the position of Homecoming Queen. Then the hard work begins. All six candidates are introduced to the student body, one grade at a time, then voted upon. To win, the candidate must win a plurality of the votes of the students. Sue Acker (pictured opposite page), a senior at Chamblee High School, accomplished the task this year and became the 1970-71 Marist Homecoming Queen. 1 4 M l,u activities 17 ■fiT ' . Gail Reed Sandy Borzak Donna Schlinkert Neil Hunter Anna Mane Spillane first runner-up 18 activities The spirit of Homecoming Week was ignited by a bonfire and exploded with a pep rally, both leading up to the big night, the night of the game. At the game patrons enjoyed the traditional march-on and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Then the War Eagles finished the night with a victory over Wills High School, making the Saturday night dance a celebration of victory as well as Homecoming. activities 19 Stadium Dedication The first football game of the 1970 season was history- making. Marist ' s first real stadium hosted this year ' s game. So called home games have been played on other schools ' fields. St. Pius High ' s Joe Bean Stadium was home for the War Eagles for the past eight years and before that they shared facili- ties with St. Joseph High School. But this year, f arist came home. Hughes Spalding Memorial Field was dedicated September 11. Attending the memorable event was Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan, D.D., Mr. Welborn B. Cody, and Mrs. Hughes Spalding Sr. and other members of the Spalding fam- ily. The Archbishop gave the invocation. Mr. Cody, a personal friend of Mr. Spalding and noted Atlanta attorney, delivered the address. Mrs. Spalding was presented with a picture of the stadium as a small token of appreciation and as a momentum of the occasion. The field gets its title from the late Mr. Hughes Spalding, Sr., a selfless benefactor of Marist. Rising to the occasion, the Marist football team, having christened the field with victo- ry the previous week, staged a sports spectacular for the dedication crowd by beating arch-foe Westminister 12 to 6. Student Council president presents a tol en of appreciation to the Spalding family. Kind words tor Hugties Spalding from an old friend 20 activities Cadets channel the team toward victory. Pius Week Just as Rome was built on seven hills, Marist ' s spirit is built on seven days. These seven days are Pius Week , the week which St. Pius X High School had turned into a nine year tradition of victory over the arch-rival War Eagles. But every year, whether or not Marist has a winning season and in defiance of the winless history of Pius Week, the spirit of every cadet is at its peak. Bouyed by this spirit, the Marist football team this year was victorious over the Gold- en Lions by a margin of 13 to O. The victory not only spoiled the Lions chance of capturing most wanted prey, but won the Eagles recognition by the Atlanta Journal as the state ' s team of the week . Veteran Coach Charles Alexander addressed the pep rally on the day of the game. No-one was more aware than he of Marist ' s record in this traditional encounter. But still he voiced a seemingly dan- gerous confidence in victory. Apparently, he was not alone in his confidence, for the gym shook as the students showed their enthusiasm for Coach Alexander ' s final prophetic words, THE DROUGHT HAS ENDEDV K  % C% J War Eagles eagerly await the Pius offense iwSMOKINC The team must have read the sign No one wMi be allowed on the field after Ifie game activities 23 Wing commander Danny Davis receives his insignia from his mother. Each year another select group of seniors are initiated into the fraternity of cadet officers. On Sunday. November I, 1970, each officer was presented his commission by Col. Jindrich in a ceremony in the new stadium. The cadet ' s insignia of rank was then pinned on by his mother or guardian m keeping with mili- tary tradition. Band faculty 59 Aerospace In 1966 when Marist was invited to join the Junior Air Force ROTC program, she readily accepted, realizing that in this Space Age the Air Force was adapted to the needs of today ' s youth. The Aerospace Department has proven itself worthy of the school ' s confidence. The three instructors, Colonel Jindrich, Sargeant Thomas, and Sargeant Hardy instruct each cadet in leader- ship ability, navigation, the history of the Air Force and the Space Age, pilotry, and many other related areas. Aerospace Education is limited to the ninth through the twelfth grades. These four years not only aid in the expansion of each cadet ' s knowledge, but also prepare him for college AFROTC pro- grams. Each student graduated from Marist with four years of Aerospace Education is credited with two years of college-level Air Force ROTC. (left to right) Sgt, Thomas. Aerospace 1. Religion Part of the uniqueness of Marist School is its concern with the religious and spiritual life of the students, and as an apostalate of the Society of Mary, Marist has a long line of tradition in its religious concern and moral enlightenment of its students. The religious department offers a six- year curriculum, helping Catholics and non-Catholics to form religious, spiritual, and social values. Students are offered two courses of study; Religion, intended primarily for Catholics and Charac- ter Development for non-Catholics. (left to right) Fr, Hogan. Religion 12. Character Development 12. Mrs. Lewis and Mr. Houston joined the Science Department hoping to give each student a better understanding of their environment, whether it be the earth or the entire universe. Physical Science, the course addition to the department, was offered to some ninth and tenth grade students. The event was the Regional Science Fair, in which the Science Department hosted schools from the Atlanta area. y (Clockwise) Mr. Houston. Earth Science. Under study this year in the Math Department are innovative projects designed to give Marist students that needed understanding. Acquiring a computer terminal this year, the department offered an extracurricular course in programming during the second semester. Their hopes are that the course will be included in the curriculum next year and eventually the computer can be used as a teaching aid in other math courses. Also tried this year were new approaches to conventional material such as programed courses designed to give students more individual instruction and attention. Algebra I, Journalism 62 faculty English The English Department can be described by many words, but the one word which best described its action this year was change . Many changes to the department were made possible by a five-thousand dollar donation from a private foundation. A portion of the donation was allocated to buy books and pamplets, available and prof- itable, to both students and faculty members. Room 212 was then converted into an English office supplied with typewriters, desks, and all other needed facilities. In order to keep pace with new teaching methods, the department purchased new Audio-Visual equipment and additional phonographs. Assisted by Dr. Charles Billiard of Georgia State Uni- versity, the department adopted a new course of studies. Father Hughes, head of the English Department, described the new teaching method in two words, sequential progression . This is simply a three-phase program with each phase lasting two years, in which a student is introduced to grammar, literature, and writ- ing skills. i clockwise) Col Van Houlen. English 9. The Department, headed by Prof. Juan Benedit, announced plans this year to expand the coming year ' s cur- riculum. The expansion will allow any cadet the opportu- nity to take two years of Latin, four years of French, four years of Spanish and or one year of German. The new German course, incidentally will be taught by Mr. Griffin, the latest addition to the Lan- guage Department, whose major in college was in German. {lelt to right) Mr. Lowrey. The Department curric- ulum includes six subjects offered from the seventh to the twelfth grades. Georgia History is concerned with the historical dev- elopment of Georgia and its inhabitants. World Georgraphy includes the study of man and his environ- ment throughout the world. Civics is concerned with the structure of the Ameri- can Government. Amer- ican History is a survey of the developement of the nation ' s heritage through the Civil War. Economics and Twent i eth-Cent u ry America are offered to upper classmen. Eco- nomics is the study of the use or management of resources to satisfy human wants as fully as possible. Mansts mighty offense prepares to attack. We tiave won. we can win, AND WE WILL WIN ' 68 sports Charge! DiCario dodges defense. Seniors The seniors are the corner stone of most football teams and Marist ' s team is no exception. The coaches should be able to mold a good team next year, and hopefully they will have another great season. But the team will have to work hard, for the seniors will be greatly missed. These seniors will look back on this year with pride; for, at the height of their high school career, their team was undefeated. When they played, they played well; and when they gave the game all they had, it was enough. He was still a young boy when his family moved to San Francisco. It was there that he met the Marist Fathers who were in charge of his parish. Our Lady of Victories. After attending Saint Mary ' s High School in Oakland, Philip moved to Washington D. 0. to study for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1909. After serving as an assistant parish priest in San Francisco and new Orleans, he came, in 1927, to Marist on Ivy Street. He was principal there for twenty-six years. With the exception of the two years which he spent teaching at Immaculate Seminary in Louisiana, he spent the rest of his life in the Atlanta area devoting most of his time to the teaching and administration at Marist School. He was in charge of Saint Joesph ' s in Marietta for eleven years; served as vice- president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for four years, and as a chaplain at the Marietta Bell Bomber plant for three years. On January 24, 1971, at the age of 86, he fell victim of a fatal heart attack. He had served as a Marist priest for 61 years. Above are but a few of the events in the life of Father Philp Dagneau. Even the highlights of his life are too numerous to mention. But could we list them all, they could not do his life justice. For Father Dagneau ' s life was more than a series of incidents. It was an example to students and adults; to priests and laymen. And though we are robbed of his physical presence, we can never be robbed of that example. Truly, he lives on, not only with our Father in Heaven, but also in the hearts and lives of all who knew him. 166 epiiogue ' W epilogue 167 THANKS Over the last six years Father MacLeod has been the moderator of some of the most active clubs in Marist ' s history. One of his greastest undertakings was the four groups of cheerleaders which practiced during the week and attended every football and basketball game. Almost every article you may have read about Marist in a local newspaper was submitted to the newspaper by the Marist Press Club, which was directed by Father MacLeod. He also moderated the Folk Group which, for the past four years, traveled from parish to parish on Sundays gaining state-wide acclaim. Among his other activities were the Drill Team and the Pep Club, as well as taking pictures for the newspa- pers and the yearbook. Because of the unending efforts and endless hours of work involved in these undertakings, as well as the responsibilities involved in his vocation as a priest and a teacher, the yearbook staff gratefully dedicates the 1971 GUIDON to Fa- ther Edward MacLeod. 168 epilogue «ik -akJ •nsJa ' v .
