W 1 m 5 'i As you look through this annual, remem- ber, the main object- ive of this book is to please you,you are the reason a yearbook is produced. The staf:E's task each year is to capture the school rronths, academically and athletically through photographs and words. They were known by their bewildered faces, and upperclass' smen by their knowvit-all sneers. Initiation week was marked by the re- quired traditional bibs and various stunts. During all the hilarious and insane activities, faculty members at- tempted to keep things running smooth- ly. But despite their management a few unscheduled experiences were had by the freshmen from the hands of venge- ful upper-classmen. Many Freshmen thought the week was much longer than five days but all things must end--even initiation week. The final event was the baptism in the courtyard, where the Freshmen finally became full-fledged Spartans. The Baptism was followed by a victori- ous game between Marist and Bandon and the Welcome Freshmen Dance with music provided by the Musti Bros. Band. The team placed 4th in State with 5 people in the State Tournament, yet only placed 3rd in District. In summing it up coach Olson stated, HWe need the people out for wrestling in order to take the District Championship. It's almost impossible to take District with 13 entries out of a possible 26. With a couple of good people in our heavier weights we could bring back the District Championship and a high place in State. 53 GIRLS' SPORTS ff W , 1 - .,SS e Q'i t' ' S - The Frosh V0-Zleyball team. Dan Harbert, the team's most notable runner placed first in all of the meets held. Curt Gauthier and Brian Conway were two other seniors who placed in many of the meets held. Together with senior Morgan McQuiston, the team was mainly composed up of sophomores. Among these were Tom Shaw, Steve Jones, Rich Charboneau, John Calavan, and George McNamee. Although in League play they defeated all teams except Junction City, they didn't do well in District. When two men were disqual- ified, due to tech- nicalities, the rela- tively small team was unable to achieve a top place in Dis- trict. As for next year, hopes of a larger team keep a- live possibilities of becoming District champs again. ,,,. 1 '- 5 M .fy '-Kiki-x.r .--,, Inq' ...N . . ,.7..,.-.. .m.L'YM,' 4' l Shannon Alfonso f1- K . W h I FACULTY UIn an industrial society the school should teach through pract- ice, and through trial and error, the arts and disipline necessary for economic and social order. Education must be reconceived, not as merely as preparation for mat- urity but as a continous growth of the mind and a continous illumina- tion of life. School can give us only the instrumentalities of men- tal growth: the rest depends on our absorption and interpretation of experience. H With these words of John Dewey in a discussion on the philosophy of education, the falculty at Marist hopes to help students grow in the experience of knowledge. - - fgqwffm 535211 - 1 - HseQ?rfN - afyM?JJTk , :gi S542 ffr . ,'GJEEfi1WA ' 1 wifi-15159: .5 1 'H,,:- LWSQQEQ1 it f':-. nissan 1 naw. , Wiegwwnm 2- - .- Q A vrfvF ', g3g2ap25?2 ,- 9: M ff-'ga 1, 'J ag .
