EDITOR Joaquin Friar BUSINESS MANAGER David Blanchard FACULTY ADVISOR Marjorie Elder MARION COLLEGE MARION, INDIANA The 1952 Marionette appears as the fleeting hours of a single day. Dressed up in its finest by symbol . . . word, color, and sketch . . . the Marionette of 1952 rises to a great occasion . . . A Day at Marion College. ’HE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION JESUS CHRIST THE LORD The church was erected in 1948. The committees were set up in 1936. One interesting feature was that we made our plans to build in 1947, but we got held up by the failure of our architect, and lost the entire year of 1947. Our final architect was Larimore of Ft. Wayne. He designed entirely the front of the building and choir loft. A business recession came in 1947. However, we figured that since all contracts were signed, the lower priced levels saved ap¬ proximately $5000 through the delay. The ground for the church was broken early in April of 1948, and the church was dedicated in September of that year. It is not only a building but is a symbol of reverence in the hearts of those who choose to make it their meeting place with God. imtwmWH AYERS LIBRARY The library was begun in the Spring of 1947 and was completed early in 1948. We moved the library from Teter Hall during Christmas vacation of 1947. We began using part of the building in January of 1948. The building was en¬ tirely ready for use at the beginning of the Spring term of that year except that it was not yet brick veneered. PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDING The Physical Education building was begun about July of 1948 and was completed in October of the same year. We moved the bookstore, from what is now the General Office, late in the fall, probably just in time for the opening of the winter term. The Snack Shop was installed in the summer of 1949. The recreation room was put into use sometime during the spring of that year. go fw IS GIRLS’ DORMS These three buildings, in which the girls are housed, are under the supervi¬ sion of the dean and the assistants to the dean. Teter Hall can accommodate about one hundred girls comfortably. Three years ago, the first floor of Teter Hall was beautifully remodeled. Now the girls appreciate their spacious and well-decorated parlor and the guest room, which provides the happy privilege of getting acquainted with missionaries, ministers, and other distinguished visi¬ tors. Both the Annex and Baker House can accommodate about fifteen girls for those who choose the home-like atmosphere. Page six ’ Page seven The Ad Building is the center of school activities. It is a three-story brick structure. It contains of¬ fice, laboratories, class¬ rooms and the chapel. Congress Hall is a two-story brick structure that serves as a dormitory for men. It is located on the East Campus. Yea, team! Let’s go! The gymnasium is the center of athletic activities for both men and women. It contains a basketball floor and dressing rooms. These rooms are fitted with lockers and showers. WILBUR T. DAYTON, Th.D DEDICATION Page eight It is with pride that we look to one of our own who has made great strides in the field of religious education. Dr. Wilbur T. Dayton, a man of wisdom and strong Christian char¬ acter, came to Marion College in 1943 from Northern Baptist Seminary. He received his A. B. and B. D. degrees from Houghton College. The degree of Master of Religious Education was granted him at Northern Baptist. In 1943 he was awarded the Doctor of Theology degree from the same institution. After being at Marion two years, he was made Assistant Dean of Theology. The position of Acting Dean was given him in 1947 and Dean in 1949. He is also chairman of the committee on “Cultural and Religious Life,” which sponsors the Student Conference. In connection with this, he has much to do with the work of the gospel teams. Dr. Dayton is making a tour of the Holy Land in July and August of this year. For the years of service he has given to Marion College, it is with heartfelt gratitude and esteem that this volume of the Marionette is dedicated to him. Mr. Noggle has served Marion College for eleven years as Field Representative. As he trav¬ els throughout the Marion College area, his ra¬ diant Christian character represents well our sch ool’s spiritual atmosphere. ADMINISTRATIVE I Mr. Baldwin has made himself known this year at Marion College as a congenial friend by the sincere and efficient manner in which he serves the college as treasurer. Miss Clevenger, our registrar for two years, has served beyond the line of duty” in her pleasant way. All who know her have come to admire her friendly helpfulness. Mrs. Klaasen has been the college bookkeeper for four years. In this time she has become more and more appreciated for her faithful and un¬ tiring efforts in seeing that the office work is done. There is much work involved in keeping Marion College pro¬ gressing. To aid Dr. McConn in all the administrative functions, are the able, devoted members of the administrative staff. STAFF PRES. WM. F. McCONN B.O., M.A., D.D. MEMORIAM MARY K. RUDD Mary Kathryn Croft Rudd, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Charles Croft, was born into a Wesleyan Methodist parsonage in Eskridge, Kansas, on April 6, 1912. For the past several years she had been Assistant Professor of Elemen¬ tary Education. She brought to her class-room an excellent background of train¬ ing and experience, and not only taught successfully but took a vital interest in the spiritual welfare of her students. She has left on the campus the memory of a godly, consecrated life expended in behalf of others. During her service on the Marion College Faculty, she was married to George Rudd of Laconia, New York. Mary Rudd was known throughout evangelical circles as the composer of both words and music of six gospel songs published by Homer Rodeheaver and entitled, Songs by Mary K. Croft.” On the morning of November 20, 1951, Mrs. Rudd passed away. She had lived a full, influential, and devout Christian life not to be forgotten by Mar¬ ion College. It is here in the dew of early morning that we gain strength for the day. We quickly dress before the ringing of the breakfast bell. After breakfast, alert minds jump from class to class. ENIORS As we seniors press our drab gowns and un¬ tangle our tassels, we wipe away tears prompted by hearts filled with memories. The profitable years at Marion College have swiftly drawn to a close. These have been precious years in which we have made life-time friends. As we face the future—the field of Christian service for some, the field of teaching for many, and the field of further training for others—we go out, lean¬ ing on the everlasting arms.” Page eighteen BILL ALLEN Jonesboro, Indiana B. With each new school year something new is added—the Freshman Class. So, here at Marion College, as usual, at the beginning of this school year a new group of students was enrolled into the student body. Now that we have accustom¬ ed ourselves to the campus, its buildings, and its inhabitants, we feel at last that we are a part of her. The activities of the first few weeks were too soon over. We surprised the school, in¬ cluding ourselves, by defeating the mighty Sophomores during initiation. With this victory in our minds, we began college life in earnest. As the years continue to roll by, our prayer is that we might ever be faithful stewards of the Lord, proving that Christ is in all.” 0 Page thirty-eight ' MARTHA BALDWIN Marion, Indiana MARY BARLEY Marion, Indiana CARLENE BATES Means, Kentucky DOROTHY BEYLER Plymouth, Indiana WESLEY BOWERSOCK Damascus, Ohio ROBERT BRADBURY Lawndale, California LARRY BURCH Adrian, Michigan MARVIN CARLISLE Muskegon, Michigan JOHN CRIM New Castle, Indiana RUSSELL CURTISS Plymouth, Indiana DONALD DAUGHENBAUGH Westerville, Ohio RUTH DAUGHERTY Elwood, Indiana DONALD DA WALT Tippecanoe, Indiana NORMA JEAN DAVIS Kirkland, Indiana VONCIEL DAVIS Selma, Alabama CHESTER DEARDORFF Kenton, Ohio DOROTHY DeBORD E. Nicholson is the son of Dr. Roy S. Nicholson, President of the Wesleyan Methodist Con¬ nection. While attending Mar¬ ion College, R. S. and Mary Pat felt definitely called to Japan as missionaries. The students of Marion College wanted to send a missionary out to a foreign field, so R. S. and Mary Pat were chosen. They have organ¬ ized a chapel in Tokyo, and are now moving out farther. During the time that they have been there, a six-member gospel team has been organized to preach in the rural areas and out in the mountains. During the summers R. S. and Mary Pat hold Bible Schools and Camp Meetings. According to the last report received, the meetings were being attended by hun¬ dreds. Their first term will be up in 1957. Let us all back R. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwell¬ ing. For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
