SEN wk After completing eight years in the Gram- mar Grades, we entered High School as Fresh- men in September, 1943. We w e re ninety - nine strong, and determined to conquer that before us. As our leaders for the year, we elected Sara Johnson as President, Jack Goode as Vice- President, Ruby Byrd as Secretary, and Polly Hawkins as Treasurer. We would not attempt to say what the teachers thought of us, but the opinion we had of our- selves was not to be ques- tioned. When we became Soph- omores, we began to real- ize we were really a part of the High School, having I CD R S CLASS HISTORY WHITE BYRD BANKS CRAWLEY LYNN CRAWLEY , BETTY LOU BANKS RUBY BYRD . . We began this year by electing officers: Robert White, President, Wayne Nor- man, Vice-President, Melba Simpson, Secretary, and Guy Nichols, Jr., Treasurer. The class en- rollment was eighty-three and much to our de- light thirteen of our members were on the foot- ball team. Jack Goode brought honor to us by being chosen All-Conference end. As Juniors our class became more active than heretofore. We were confronted with the new responsibilities and opportunities, in the band, on the school paper, in clubs, and on the foot- ball and basketball teams. This year our class was especially honored by having fourteen of its members elected into the National Honor Society: L. D. Atkins, Jr., John Beaman, Ruby Byrd, Lynn Crawley, Betty Davis, Joanne Field, Lois Ann Finley, Polly Hawkins, John Kluttz, Hazel McCurr, Harry Neighbors, Melba Simp- son, Lena Swann, and Robert White . . . In the spring of '46 we gave our class play, "Black Cats," a whirlwind farce in three acts. A large audience was entertained by this amateur per- formance . . . During this year four members of

the class entered the Armed Forces: Guy Nichols, Jr., Zelotes Finley, Jack Goode, and William Stanley . . . The climax of the year came when we entertained the Senior Class of '46 at the Junior-Senior Banquet. This was an occasiot long to be remembered, as it was the first really big event of our own planning since entering High School. Now at last we have reached that cherished "last year." Sixty-one out of a former class of ninety-nine have become Seniors, dignified or otherwise. At the beginning of the year we chose as our representatives: Lynn Crawley, President, Betty Lou Banks, Vice-President, Ruby Byrd, Secretary, and Robert White, Treasurer. To add to our prestige and honor these seniors: Frances Pool, Margaret Atkins, Glenn Mur- dock, and Betty Hope Gibson were elected into the National Honor Society . . . Our football team, mainly Seniors, won a much-deserved v. if re L 1 Il I A.. ie N" - A T W JUDY NORMAN MASCOT 'D' Y, M M 3' 413: :.r" f PATRICK LOGAN MASCOT second place in the Western Conference. We had many outstanding players on the team, such as Dean Padgett who gained a position on the All-State team, Lynn Crawley, Bill Burleson, and Fuzz England played outstanding ball the entire season. At the beginning of the year, to our great joy, lights and steel bleachers were in- stalled on the football field and we enjoyed a privilege not before permitted at Marion High School - night football games. The performance of the High School Band, of which many mem- bers are seniors, added pleasure to the games. lt has all meant a great deal to us, the fun and even the hard work, and so it is not with- out regret that we say "goodbye" to Marion High School. May the remainder of our years be as happy. Our teachers have set an admir- able example for us by their unselfishness and sincere devotion to duty and we shall always remember them as friends and helpers in our High School days. -13
