Bn' HIGHEST HONOR RATING GIVEN SCHOOL ANNUAL AT PRESS CONVENTION: ATTEND CONCLAVE Marion High School again found itself well rep- resented at the annual convention of the Indiana High School Press Association, held October 17, 18, and 19 at Iiranklin College, Franklin, Indiana. Highlighting the convention was an address by Leland Stowe, Paris correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. Mr. Stowe is well acquaint- ed with the position of the European press, and in his talk he contrasted it with American journal- ism. Especially interesting were his remarks on the subtle use of propaganda and its effects. The annual convention banquet was held liri- day night. Here awards were presented to school newspapers and annuals. The All-State Superior rating was awarded to the Marion High School Cactus, The Survey was not entered be- cause of lack of journalistic supervision the pre- ceding year. ' Marion delegates were especially fortunate in securing an interview with Miss Cora Morton, journalism supervisor of Norwood High School, Norwood, Ohio. Miss Morton, who has had much experience in yearbook work, discussed the Marion Cactus', and offered many helpful suggestions and criticisms which have been incorporated in the 1936 annual. She complimented the book highly on its originality and composition. On Friday. round table discussions were held on the various phases of journalism. These were organized as classes and were conducted by men and women prominent in the fields of news writ- ing and other branches of journalism. A class in newspaper advertising was conducted by Mr. B. H. Penrod, director of publications at Marion High School. In conjunction with the Indiana High School Press Convention is the Indiana journalistic teach- ers and advisers convention. Bliss Gladys Lewis, Miss Mary Prickett and Mr. B. H. Penrod repre- sented Marion High School at this meeting. The two conventions are always held simultaneously. The conclave was ended by a dance held in the college gymnasium. Delegates from the Cactus were B. H. Penrod, adviserg Miss Gladys Lewis, treasurer, jack Gelder, editorg Evelyn Anderson. associate editor: jerry Torrance. business mana- gerg XVilliam Blake, circulation manager, and Harold XVittcoff, literary editor. The Survey was represented by B. H. Penrod and Miss Mary Prickett, advisersg Elmer Smith, editor and Wil- liam Lugar, sports editor. W cooniflr-fc,-www 0 UK swf' SODALITAS ROMANA OMNI ANNO MAIOR MELIORQUE FIT Hail the noble Romani! The Latin Club with its traditions and background completed another active year and was very successful in carrying out its purposeg namely, To give an opportunity for further study of life, customs, and the lan- guage of the Roman people and to promote good fellowship among the members of the Latin De- partmentf' The organization of the club is modeled after the ancient Roman Republic. Jerry Torrance and LaVonne Leech served as consuls. The aediles, who, like the aediles of old, were responsible for entertaining the plebeians and patricians alike, were Betty Beitler, Sue Hull, and Charles Rhetts. Betty Coomer and Allan Dreyer, as quaestors, looked after the club's finances and rec- ords. Ralph Cowan, an underclassman, was elect- ed plebian tribune, an office that had great veto power in old Rome. Miss Gladys Neal, Latin instructor, acted as sponsor. In December this august body sponsored a skating party at Van Buren. The fancy skating of the eighty guests present would, no doubt, have made Nero turn green with envy, had he been there. Inasmuch as the year 1935 was the bimillenium kof the Roman poet Horace, one of the year's pro- grams centered around this Latin poet. The young moderns were surprised to find that many things have not changed much since the days of Horace. A short classical play, with a twentieth century atmosphere, called Medicus, was present- ed in'Latin for the entertainment ofthe members. The club dedicated one of its meetings to Apollo, as god of Music. The program featured a toga clad orchestra, which furnished entertain- ment and accompanied those present in singing ancient and modern songs in Latin. Someone sug- gested that, judging from the revelry, a casual observer might have mistaken this honoring of Apollo for a festival to Bacchus. The gala annual May Breakfast was the climax of the year's activities. The high spot of this traditional breakfast was the distribution of a Ro- man newspaper', containing all the latest news and scandal of the Latins.,' The year was closed with an informal picnic late in May. The biology group, sponsored by Mrs. Pauline Mayhugh, met twice a month and centered its at- tention on project work. Among the projects undertaken were taxidermy, a laboratory terra- rium, collections, posters and slides. These will be added to the department museum. Field trips were also important parts of the work of the club. The well-rounded program was completed by an oc- casional social event. Oflicers of the club were Barbara, Woodard, Presidentg Virgil Patterson, Vice-President, and Roberta Street, Secretary and Treasurer. The chemistry club, under the direction of Mr. john H. Link, centered its attention on individual experimentation. Several chemical phenomena were observed and several experiments in qualita- tive analysis were performed. The club also con- structed an ultra-microscope. Inspection tours of industrial units in neighboring cities were also taken. Chief among these was a trip to Ft. Wayfne where the club members witnessed the activities of the General Electric Company and the North- ern Indiana General Service Company. Officers of the chemistry club were: Donald Stephens, Presi- dent, Robert Batton, Vice-President, and Mr. Link, Secretary and Treasurer. With Mr. Omar H. Blossom as supervisor, the physics group commenced their activities by con- ducting gas pressure tests for the Central Indiana Gas Company. Approximately twenty-five boys were stationed in various places throughout the city and conducted the tests simultaneously at various intervals during the day. Each boy was reimbursed for his services. Among other activi- ties of the club was advanced experimentation in electricity, especially in the fields of dynamos and motors. Addie Marshall served as President of the club and Paul Hyatt was Secretary-Trea- surer. At the beginning of the second semester, the entire science club became afhliated with the In- diana High School -Iunior Academy of Science. This is an organization through which science clubs may keep in contact with each other and profit by useful suggestions. Shows Marked Improvement The Nlarion High School Band under the supervision of its new di- rector, Philip XY, Pulley, grew in a very few months from a depression ridden 0I'g.'lI1i7.'lIllJI1 to one quite ca- pable of competing in the State contest in April. Director Polley graduated from Marion High School in 1925 and played in the first organiyied school band. It was in- deed a coincidence that he should return ten years later to direct that tame organization. The first concert was presented to an audience of nine hundred. This was followed by two more concerts, both well received and profitable enough to allow the band to participate in both the district and state contests. At the district contest, held in Peru, the group and many soloists and ensembles won the right to participate in the state contest at Iillthart. At the latter, the band was placed in second division and lilwood Miclsel, bass clairinet solo- ist, became eligible lor the National contest at Cleveland. The Swan. The Hungarians subtle satirizing of court intrigue combined with his incomparable romantic portrayal of the tragic love of Professor Agi, court tutor, played by .Iaclv Gelder, and Princess Alexandra, Liberta Stephen- son, afforded the high school students a new ex- perience in good theater. This love constitutes the theme of the story, in which again royal precedence supercedes all hu- man emotion. Alexandra marries Prince Albert, Alerry Torrance. and regains the crown that the family lost through the conquests of Napoleon. . ,X -.4 gas-1, lllil ffu ll' Il t'l'4' wfJi'fI!H'Vtlx kt't'f7f!I1Q IltIfl'!7 fry uigfvl niet' lfirir ffrf4'k. Mr. Hooker receiv- ed his high school work at Anderson and is a graduate of Butler University. Being outstanding in football, basketball, and baseball Mr. Hooker received in each, numerous athletic awards both in high school and in college. In 1924 he was made honorary member of the All-American basketball team chosen by distinguished sport writers. Mr. Hooker came to Marion from New- castle, where he had been director of athletics for nine years. During the period Mr. Hooker was at Newcastle his teams repeatedly were present at the state finals and in 1932 he turned out a squad that won the championship. Throughout the two years that Mr. Hooker has been coach at Marion High School he has continuously encouraged sportsmanship on the part of both the student body and the teams. So successful have been his efforts that, as a result he has been the recipient of much complimentary comment from coaches and principals of visiting schools. This team composed of all new mater- ial, with the exception of three men, pounded their way through some of the best teams in Indiana. In the strong Big Ten Conference the Purple and Gold lost only to Anderson, one of the weaker teams in the conference, after winning from Logansport and tying the very strong Muncie, Kokomo, and Frank- fort elevens. Marion won all of her conference games except one, a crushing defeat dealt by Wabasli, one of the strongest teams in the State. This team was able to boast of RAHH xoll one of the best coaching staffs in the state. Mr. Orville J. Hooker ad- ' mired by all Indiana fans, completed his second year with Marion High School. Coach Hooker was ably re- inforced by the valuable assistance of Mr. jerry Naugle, formerly from Elwood who came to Marion at the same time as Hooker. Two other men who did considerable work with the team were the two junior high school coaches, Messrs. Ronald Jacobson and Merle Rife. In the first game of the season the Giants met Sheridan on whom they scored at will. Marion show- ed decided ability in every depart- EIOHN DYE ROBERT BATTON CHARLI-S WINTERS J: r-- ' CHAS. Scoring several times in each quarter the Purple and Gold outscored Sheridan 46 to 0. The following week the Hookermen travelled to Muncie where they played good football but trailed 6 to 0 most of the way, the Bearcats having smashed over a score in the second quarter by hard line drives which pushed Marion steadily backward. This score aroused eleven Marion Giants who finished the game pushing Muncie all over the field, but still with less than a minute to go the Bearcats led 6 to 0. Then from punt-formation Marshall heaved a long pass to jack Dye who pulled himself away from three, would-be tacklers to run 48 yards to tie the score at 6-all. The kick for extra point was wide and Marion's first conference game ended 6 to 6. journeying to Kokomo for a sec- ond conference game the Purple and Gold showed remarkable defensive ability in stopping every Kokomo play, but they couldn't gather enough push to score. When the game ended the statistics showed Marion to be the victor but the score board showed a 0 to 0 tie. In their third conference game the Giants lined up against a heavy Frankfort team in a downpour of rain, both teams playing the best ball possible in a sea of mud and Line smashes being used the art of the game by both J' J FLOYD SMITH ROBT. WALLACE ADDIE MARSHALL CHAS. SHODLOUSKI X s teams, the ball was mostly in the middle of the field neither team really threatening to score. The Purple and Gold again played to a tie for the third consecu- tive time. Determined to break this string of ties Marion opened up a bag of tricks composed of passes, laterals, and end sweeps against Elwood's sturdy panthers. This new offense executed brilliantly combined with per- fect football weather succeeded in giving the giants the decision, 19 to 0. Logansport, considered one of the weakest teams in the Big Ten, was the next opponent of Marion. These two teams met on a hot dusty field with Marion a heavy favorite. The Loganberries proved, however, that the game is never over until the final gun, by battling Marion nip and tuck until the last quarter when the score was tied 6 to 6. Then the Giants gathering all their strength charged down the field forty yards with two passes, an end run, a reverse, and three line bucks, to score the winning touchdown. This fourth conference game was won by Maroin 12 to 6. In the fifth and last big ten con- ference game the Hookermen con- fidently entered into a battle with the weak Anderson Indians. The Giants showed good form on of- fense but their defense proved inadequate against an inspired An- derson offense, and the Indians by long runs and passes put over two touchdowns on the bewildered Purple and Gold and succeeded in JOHN MURRAY CHARLES ODOM GEO, RAUCII VERNON CLOSSIN DONALD BEHR JAMES LIBENGOOD DONALD MCFARLAND preventing our eleven from scoring. This 12 to 0 de- feat blasted Marion's Big Ten Conference champion- ship hopes for 1935 and gave us the only black mark on our season's record. To prove that they could come back from defeat to victory, the Purple and Gold met and triumphed over Bluffton in their hardest fought non-conference game by a score of 13 to 0. Twice Bluffton's strong eleven reached Marion's one yard line and twice the Purple and Gold forward wall led by Blake and Mar- shall held to take the ball on downs. Marion had at last found herself and was again a smooth football machine. After the Bluffton game Marion had two weeks in which to prepare for one of Indiana's best high school teams, Wabash. These two weeks were spent in hard intensive drill on new plays and formations and study of the tricky Wabash offense. All of this drill, however, proved of no avail. The Apaches led by the Yarnell twins trampled the Giant squad and seor- ed almost at will, with straight passes and smashing off-tackle plays. The Hookermen did their best but were up against a better team and suffered a one-sided defeat of 41 to 0. Probably we should mention here a few of those who were outstand- ing on the gridiron for Marion. On defense we had Marshall, a 200- pound veteran tackle, who did all the kicking for the teamg and Win- ters, a light veteran guard, always LAWRENCI' USHER VVILLIAM BLAKE PAUL EIKENBERRY EARL WERT N 3 i 1 Top Row lithr Stextns Sthills Hx ll! On oflense none could equal Dillon's smashing line bucks nor Vogel's passing and heady signal calling. The whole squad is to be commended, but these men stood out and deserve special mention. Of the first string players the only underclassman to carry on next year is Charles Maggart. Maggart, an ace quarterback, handles every phase of the game admirablyg his superb passing and running ability greatly bolstered up the Giants' attack and gives prom- ise of even more to come. Among the second string varsity members, all of whom saw action dur- ing the season, are eight men who will return next year to lend their strength and skill to another Marion eleven. Playing in the backfield are Don Mc- Farland and Jim Libengood, who have acquired enough experience to give an excellent performance in days to come. Giving promise of a heavy, sturdy line for 1936 are Earl Wert and George Rauch, two scrappy boys upon whom the task of end positions will rest. At tackles there are two heavy, experien- ced boys, Paul Eikenberry and Vernon Clossin. The center position will prob- ably be controlled by Lawrence Usher, a hard tackling lineman who would benefit the best of teams. Another chap who has two years of football for Marion High School ahead of him is Don Behr. Though only a Sophomore, Behr proved himself capable of hand- ling the guard position very efficiently. While on the defensive against the El- wood Panthers Behr snatched a parti- ally blocked pass out of the air and raced across the goal line, giving him- self the honor of being the only guard to score all year. These boys after having gained a great deal of experience against the best of teams should prove to be the mainstay of coach Hooker's next Giant eleven. With a difficult schedule and a top ranking in the Big Ten Confer- ence in view, these players will do their utmost for their coach and school. The statistics which follow show better than the scores of the games the calibre of the team which trained and drilled from August to mid- November for Marion High School. LARGE NUMBER OF BOYS INTRAMURAL BASKETBAL Using the same plan as was introduced under the supervision of Mr O C Naugle last year all of the basketball minded boys in high school un able to gain 21 place on the varsity squad enjoyed this sport to the utmost in intramural orgamza tion wh ch has existed in Marion High School for many years Instead of allowing the boys to form their own teams as in past years Mr Naugle s new plan pro vides for more balanced teams All the fellows gather together in a group the best are chosen as captains who choose their teams This makes the squads more evenly matched and eliminates all the others As usual the league was divided into two groups one named after different species of fish and the other after species of birds In each group each team played the other twice In the bird league the Jays marked up a string of victories clear of defeats the entire year The Suckers in the fish league lost their first four games but came back admirably and completed the season without another defeat taking the championship in their league The tournament prom: ed to be a most interest ing one but the ays led on by Bud Dillon Addie L PARTICIPATE IN Marshall and Bob Roush won the first two games by substantial scores to place the intramural crowns on the heads of the team members In order to add a new 1nd saried interest in in tramural competition there was inaugurated into the system the presenting of two awards These awards were miniature basketball players in ac tion and were to be given to the player showing the most sportsmanlike attitude and the contestant who proved to be most valuable to his team As with all other such awards these were given names The one which was given to the boy with the best sportsmanlike spirit was called the Naugle award after the mstructor of the whole Intramural or ganuation This ass ard was won by Eugene Ford who play ed hard clean ball throughout the season and was present at every game The prize going to the boy most valuable to his team was carried off by Robert Shockey as competent a player as any in the intramural sports The name decided upon for this tribute was the Hooker Award after Marion s varsity coach These au lrds will bc continued through the coming years and it is hoped that they will in crea e the interest of all boss entered in the in tramural set up I 'N . , . , . . . , . . , - . . Baseball was the first sport set upon by these sportsters. A tournament was held in each class and these winners met in after school competition. Following this closely came kick-pin-ball and then volley ball. In these contests spirited tourna- ments also were held. Probably the best liked of all games, to the girls, is basketball. This game was made the more interesting by a series of tournaments held between teams, which were chosen within the classes, and the winners of each class played in the finals after school. Beginning the second semester, new teams had to be chosen because of the changing of the class- es. Proceeding just as before, a tournament was held with these new teams and after many spirit- ed contests another victor was crowned. Close upon the heels of basketball came volley ball. This year the teams went at the game whole- heartedly and learned the way it is really played. After the girls had mastered the science of the game the tournaments were again held. Again, the season changed and the classes turn- ed to the fast game of cage-ball. This game creat- ed a great deal of excitement and most of the con- tests were watched by interested students. During the year Miss Jane Rhue, instructor, took many of the out-of-door-minded girls on all day hikes, and several times different girls' relay teams competed against each other.
