This M gives him the elegibility for membership in the well known , 53 club of former and present Marion High School athletes. the M Club. ' V The prime purpose of the Club is to encourage and keep the athletics of M.H.S. to the high school standard of the highest ideals in all sports and in- 1 tense opposition to either professionalism or foul play. lt is the members of j this loyal organization who, from the sidelines of every contest, are vigorously gl supporting their Alma Mater. l Tv The Club was organized seven years ago by former M.H.S. athletes who 5 believed that they could better lend support to the school's athletics as an or- i- ganized group. I HEN KING BA5K15'l'15ALI. ascended his throne. November 18. for the Giants 1927-28 season. he took as his ruling Queen, Lady Fate. V l A new system was adopted in Marion High School this year for team 9 organization by Coach Thomas. The system included three school teams: L ' the varsity, which was called A team and which was under the direction of Coach Thomas: B team, which took the place of the heretofore second team, '. , under Coach Pribble: and a C or Freshman team composed of freshmen 1 from the Junior High Schools under Coach Jacobson of the McCulloch school. 'K 1 The HA team men who fought through the season loyally for the l purple and gold and who received the coveted sweaters were Kuhnhein. who came to Marion this year from the ranks of the Anderson Indians. Stickann. Aldrich. Nall. McBride. Sullivan. Yunker, Payntor. Carl and Kilgour. l I It was with satisfaction to all Marion that the first game of l928 was l the climax of the grand dedication of the Memorial Coliseum. the new home i T of the Giants of both basketball and track. The result of this game was a hard- fought victory to the Anderson Indians. 35 to 25. l.-l Prior to the opening of the new lield house. Marion had been defeated by :ii Winclaester in their opening game, Columbia City. Central and South Side of . . Fort Vv'ayne. Greenfield. Vincennes and Kokomo. The last of these did not remain long unavenged. The home games among these were played on the Civic Hall floor. fi ' The second game on the new floor came on a Friday, the l3th. Devoid i of all superstitions. this ill omen proved no handicap to the Giants making the Bedford Stonecutters stall the final three minutes for a 40-36 victory. Revenge was gotten by the Thomasmen from the Kokomo Kats in the fl T follovving game. The result of this spectacular and speedy battle was 22-Zl and the first victory of the season for the Giants was in order. . Another victory for M.H.S. resulted in the Huntington Vikings leaving lfl y Memorial Coliseum beaten 43-36. The remainder of the games played dur- i ing the season ended as Giant defeats. They included Frankfort, Connersville. fl i Martinsville. Anderson and Muncie. ,fl y Sectional Tournament l b ' 5 By three successive victories over Matthews. Jonesboro and Gas City. 12 the '27-'28 Giants became the Marion Sectional Champions in the first tourney fl no to grace the new gym and one of the best tourneys Grant County has ever wit- QQ II nessed. Dun- fi lx kirk and Marion. ln the first game of the tournament Delphi defeated the F' yi Giants and in the third and last. gained her entrance to the state tournament Q Q' at the Butler Held house.
