wittis VAN DEVANTER Willis Van Devanter, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, graduated from Marion High School in l876. Mr, Van Devanter graduated from both DePauw University and the Cincinnati Law School. He then practiced his pro- fession in Marion and later in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he served as city attorney, In l896 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention and a year later he was appointed by President McKinley to the position of Assistant Attorney General of the United States. During the years l898 to l903 Mr. Van Devanter was a professor in Washington University. He had served as a circuit judge for eight years when he was appointed to his present posftion by President Taft in the year of 1910.
