War, ig- norance bigotry, hate, selfishness, greed-all wait with Iascivious watchfulness for the tem- ples of goodness to fall. We in nineteen fifty- two feel the walls tremble and we hear the ghosts of the past wail in anguish for the evil of the world. The mood of our book is dark- symbolic of the darkness of ignorance, which we believe lies at the root of the world's trou- bles. Yet, through it all we see a ray of hope, a brilliant piercing light for a chaotic world. It is education and the products of education. -5-?gUR ST UDEN TS L is Ei 5. in .. ,Q-Q Pb A page 11' rdf -msn l . A. Boots Zeratzky was crowned the M 6. M Queen by football Captain, lim Marineau, and then had the honor to lead the parade. Prizes for outstanding floats were awarded school clubs and organiza- tions by the Pep Club, with the Latin Club and Art Club winning the first two awards. Even the faculty had a share of the excitement by contributing their talents to the assembly skit. Game time was set at two o'clock, Saturday afternoon, October 27, but early Saturday morning students began to line up at the Walton Blesch Field to assure themselves of good seats for the big game. It was a fine game with a huge colorful audience in attendance even though the Marinette Marines went down in defeat by the score, 13-12. YULETIDE CLIMAX IS The Christmas holiday season was capped by the Senior Class at their annual Christmas dancing party. Colorful decorations and emerald green Christmas trees planned and arranged by members of the class, transformed the Marinette High School gymnasium into a fairy wonderland where the Seniors met to enjoy the exclusive class party. An impressive program during intermission time, a local orchestra tur- nishing dreamy dance music, and holiday punch and cookies served during the evening added sparkle to the memorable evening. ' Dear Ruth , a fast moving comedy, was presented this year by the Iunior Class as their annual class play. Miriam, Ruth's sister, had been sending letters to service men and sign- ing Ruth's name to them. As an added incen- tive she had also been sending Ruth's picture along. One of these service men happened to re- ceive a leave and decided to come and visit Ruth. As the play opened, Ruth is surprised by the visit of a man she had never seen be- fore in her life. However, she decided not to spoil his leave, so she played along with the act. She wound up by throwing over her boy friend, Albert, for the soldier with whom she had fallen in love. In a confusing, quick, last act, Ruth married her new love and left for Florida with him, where he was to report for his duty assignment. , The excellent choice of the play and the fine acting and production created by Miss luster, Director, and Emelyn Sappington, As- sistant Director, left little to be desired for a full evening's entertainment. After one of her hilarious escapades, Miriam is inter- rogated by her sister, Ruth, and her mother. Albert, not used to such goings on, watched bewilderedly. Lt. Seawright mich Petersonl is introduced to the Wilkens Gloger Gucwa and Alyce Topell by Ruth Uoan Grabyl even though she doesn't really know the man herself. Ruth, and Mr. 6 Mrs. Wilkins look over the house plans of Albert may Hilll. who plans to marry Ruth and build the house outlined in the plans. ' Richard Peterson, Barbara Nelson, Ed Lang, and Ioan Graby, pose for a picture at the final dress rehearsal preceding opening night. The Senior Class Play was produc- SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS HKISS AND TELL ed earlier this year than ever before. Even though the cast had a shorter time to practice, the usual fine acting and humorous entertainment reigned over the performance. Kiss and Tell , a fast moving, hil- arious play, was the story of Corliss Archer, a girl of fifteen. In trying to appear as old as her girl iriend, Mil- dred, she gets into more jams than it seems possible to get out of, in three acts. However in the end all comes out well. Miss Schloerb picked this play not only for the wonderful story but also to show the people of the community how vicious gossip can really injure the fine reputation of a person or family. It was her aim that after the play the audience would leave the auditorium a little rich- er morally as well as having been en- tertained. we wi-. QOXQXX X?-QK9 0? ve? Twenty MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE REVEAL THE LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE Science and Mathematics, the ex- act sciences, are two of the most import- ant subjects that are taught in school. Although these subjects have the few- est students in their advanced courses they greatly influence the students that take them. In a day of scientific ad- vancement, in which we live, it is hard to get anything done without the aid of science. To know more about this force which is a definite factor in the world today, is an invaluable aid in straight- ening out some of the bad conditions that face the world. With these thoughts in mind the teachers of exact sciences try to teach their subjects in such a way that the students may profit from them not only by knowing the subject but also by having improved thinking and reason- ing power. Many Mari- nette teams have had undefeated seasons, but none has faced tougher competition or shown more stuff than this year's varsity , Seventy MARINES WIN OPENER Our mighty and aroused Marines opened the season with a victory over the Wausau Lumberjacks by a score of 19-0. Starting slow but picking up speed as they went along, they showed a strong defense with a varied running attack. Bucking over from the four, lack Wei- ler scored in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter Weiler again went over and Champeau scored on a quarter back sneak. CHIPPEWA FALLS AS NEXT VICTIM Traveling 200 miles to Chipppewa Falls our boys again came out victorious. Capital- izing on early breaks the Marines rolled to a first quarter score. Ace Balthazor ran over from the thirty-yard line. In the second quar- ter they again scored, this time on a forty-yard pass from Roger Beattie to Sandy Heath. lack Weiler scored the third T. D. on a short plunge and Ioe Meyers ended the scoring for the night on a nifty sixty-yard pass interception. High- light of the game was the defensive play of Teeny Rondeau. The final score was 27-0. Bob Champeau leads blocking for break away runner, Don Stepniak, as he leads the way to another Marine victory. Don Stepniak lowers his head in an attempt to break through a Wausau safety man. Haltback, Luch Mudrak pulls away from opposing player as he Paul Thomsen, Iim Marineau, lack Weiler, and Coach Stiehm makes another gain for the Marines. WISCONSIN RAPIDS In their first home appearance of the year, the Marines subdued a big Wisconsin Rapids team 13-6. Starting slowly the Marines scored twice in the second quarter. Don Stepniak scored on a short run around left end and a little later Bob Champeau threw a touchdown pass to Sandy Heath. Wisconsin Rapids scor- ed on an accumulation of a few big runs. This was the first touchdown of the year scored a- gainst our boys. EAU CLAIRE Still keeping their winning streak intact, the Marines traveled to Eau Claire to defeat the Old Abes 13-0. The game was highlighted by outstanding defensive play. Eau Claire was held to only one first down, completed no pass- es, and gained only 39 yards. Marinette touch- downs were scored by Weiler- and Champeau. lead the victorious team from the field after brealcinq Wausaus winning streak. At the start of the second half the Marines had a 20-O lead on three touchdowns by Don Stepniak. One was a forty-yard return of a blocked punt. In the second half Escanaba scored twice before our boys roared back with a touch- down by Iack Weiler to make the final score 26-14. WEST ALLIS CENTRAL After a two week rest, which evidently did the boys some good, they came back to defeat West Allis Central 41-6. It was the first time this year that the Marines really exploded and it was a wel- come event to all Marinette rooters. Two touch- Paul Thomsen, Ace Balthazor, Teeny Rondeau and Luchie Mudrak. I MENOMINEE On Red Saturday, October ll, the Marines met the Maroons in the Annual M 6 M game. Both teams went into the game with undefeated seasons. The game was very rough and hard fought as shown by the record total of 287 yards of penalties of which 187 were against the Marines. At the half. Menominee had a 13-0 lead with two touchdown passes to Johnny Moerchan. ln the second half the Marines came back, but not quite far enough. Touchdowns were scored by Don Stepniak and Iack Weiler. INTRAMURALS ROUND OUT SPORTS PROGRAM Intramurals are most popular in the seven- th and eighth grades. These are the grades for which there is a lack of interscholastic com- petitive sports. The seventh and eighth grade boys are given a taste of organized sports in their regular physical education classes, but for many this is not enough. Hence, intra- murals! The physical education and intra- mural programs have tried to develop these programs to the point where they will not only give the boys some good fun and teach them the fundamentals of our school's competitive sports, but will also teach them the basic prin- ciples of good sportsmanship. Anyone, who enters the gym on a Friday night, when this program is in full swing, must assent that Coach Siehm has succeeded. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM COACH BASLER SETS NEW RECGRDS The Marine cagers started off the season with a bang by scalping their traditional rivals, the Shawano Indians 37 to 27. The game, while not high scoring, was marked by sharp floor play. Ken Hocking led the way for Marinette with 12 points while Grignon was high scorer for the losers with 7 points. Marinette experienced their first cold night of the season against Clintonville and it proved to be a costly one. The Marines bowed to the Truckers 39 to 34. Although the boys took plenty of shots, lack Weiler seemed to be the only one who could find the hoop. He stuffed in ll points. Marinette's talented quintet continued on their way to success by trouncing Oconto and Niagara within the space of five days. They whipped Oconto 59 to 52 and stopped Nia- gara 54 to 39. Hocking and Panzram were the sparkplugs for the Marines . Marinette completely outclassed Peshtigo in their fifth outing. Although the game was played on Peshtigo's small floor, Marinette's fast breaking offense still showed to advant- age. Eighty Menasha traveled to Marinette to furnish the season's iirst really tough competition. The Marines played a bang- up game cmd defeated the Bluejays at their own racehorse type of basketball. The contest was a thriller all the way with the Marines staging a last quarter rally win. The Marinette quintet got back into their usual groove in defeating Oconto for the second time this season 51 to 43. Ken Panzram sparked the team with 8 points. Lourdes was downed 3 days later despite the inspired playing of Tom Pen- der, the high scoring Shamrock center. The Marines look- ed slow and unimpressive in grabbing off their seventh win. On the following weekend Marinette took to the road. The first night Eau Claire exercised its jinx over our boys and it worked well enough to bring them an easy victory. Hock- ing pumped in 17 points but it was not enough. The next night the boys showed up at Chippewa Falls raring to go and looked much improved over the Eau Claire game by grabbing off a 60 to S6 win. KEN COVERT, Mgr Bob Champeau attempts a basket. Pat McAuliffe awaits rebounds. A tall Marinette team dominates the scene under the basket as as a hard hitting Marinette team leaves Francis Deschatne and lack Weller makes another two points, supported by Ken Hocking lim Payette of Lourdes behind. Ken Panzram, and Pat McAuliffe. KEN PANZRAM IACK WEILER BOB CHAMPEAU Kon Panzram and Sandy Heath steal a rebound from four Lourdes cagers. to set up another iast break. Marinette returned home for an engage- ment with Antigo on the next Saturday. Coach Basler had the boys up for this game and it paid off to the tune of a new school record. The boys scored heavily in all quarters to roll up 80 points. The first M 6 M tilt, although highly publi- cized, proved to be a routine win as did the second Peshtigo game. lack Weiler paced our boys in each game in addition to holding Moer- chen, the Maroon ace, to 9 points. Marinette was knocked off in its second tilt with Shawano but they defeated Two Rivers and Lourdes in quick succession. The boys had collected a fine head of steam and they needed all of it to dampen the spirits of Menominee. The Maroons showed a lot of fight before going down to defeat 52-50. Moer- chen got loose to score 16 points but Champeau and Panzram popped in 19 and 12 respectively for the Marines. The Marinette Cagers closed a fine season on a sour note by going down to a defeat at the hands of Antigo 45 to 40. BASKETBALL The Iunior Varsity basketball team had a fine record this season, racking up eleven wins against four losses. The I. V.'s like the varsity, set a new school record. The old record was sixty-three points, but it was easily broken when the Iunior Marines popped in seventy-one counters in the second Lourdes tilt. Although the team had four defeats in the 51-52 season, it is to the credit of Coach loslin and his boys, that only one team claimed victories in both of their contests with Marinette. This team was Shawano. The boys were definitely up for the second game, but they could not cope with the jinx which the Indians seem to hold over the Marines . Fritz Hanson drives through the entire force of the opposition to put the Young Marines ahead by two more points. Dick Pichette, Don Langlois, and Hollis Baumgarten await the no-existent rebound. Friend- ships that seemed marked for etemity either cease or are further strengthened with the realization that the battle of life is before them. Four years of struggle, smiles, and success have formed their background and developed the character of each stu- BARBARA ZERATSKY' sec dent. The Iunior Prom given in their honor: the triumph of the class play, KISS and TELL, which was so ably directed by DUDLEY HEATH, Committeeman. Miss Ella Mae Schloerb: and a rollicking class party decked out in a Christmas theme, with Roger Nicklaus as Santa Claus-these are memories pigeon-holed in a special corner of everyone's mind. Elected to the coveted office of Class President was Albert Behrens. The other officers elected were: Vice-President, Don Stepniak: Secretary, Barbara Zeratsky: Treasurer, Leo Kaufman: and Committeeman, Dudley Heath. An appreciation for the encouragement and guidance given them by Miss Miriam Frothingham, class advisor and the rest of the faculty grew as the year progressed. Then graduation came-the conclusion of carefree school days. With their diplomas, the strangeness of its possession still grip- ping them, the Seniors begin a new phase of their lives. but wherever they go they will carry the Spirit of Marinette High School with them. And it's a one-way ticket too. You'll never be a boy or girl again. Over-night you're expected to be a man or a woman and, whether you like it or not, you begin to share all adult problems. Will it be the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Marines? Will it be college? A job? Getting Married? None of these alternatives is for children. You're on your way graduation night. For many of you it will mean the start of cr short summer respite before you go on to higher education. For others it will mean starting down the long road that leads to a job. No matter what your plans- Hitch Your Wagon To a Star. Aim high-in your ideals, in your ambitions and then set out with a lot of determination to realize those ambitions. America needs high ideals, more so than she's ever needed them before and they must be subscribed to by the youth of America, the young men and women who, like your- selves, are today preparing to hitch up their wagons. Too far to a star? You know that's not true. For once we stop reaching upward we are lost. So, grab yourself a star and be on your way.
