Bank Of America Award Winners This year sixteen of Marina's top stu- dents were selected as the Bank of Amer- ica Achievement Award Winners. The pro- cess of selection began with the faculty choosing the students which they felt re- presented the top of their field of study in each of the thirteen catagories. Each of these students then received a certificate of achievement from Bank Of America in honor of their accomplishemnts. The facul- ty then chose its top three students in the general fields of study which are Applied S Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, and Science 8 Mathematics. The Bank of America Awards are pre- sented each year to the top students of the Senior Class who meet the eligibility re- quirements. These requirements are that have nominated student must have main- tained an overall GPA of at least 3.00 and spent a minimum of at least 30 semester hours of study in their field. Although the academic requirements are a major consid- eration in the selection of nominees, com- munity services and other extracurricular activities are carefully weighed. So the re- cipients of these awards are students who excel both academically and as members of their community which is why we are so proud to recognize them for their accom- plishments. NCTE Each year, the National Council of Teachers of English sponsors a writing contest in which certain students are se- lected to compete. The purpose of this contest is to encourage students in their writing and then recognize those who have displayed an outstanding talent for writing. Although the NCTE has no funds to award scholarships to winners, they do print a listing of the winners and send it to over 3,000 colleges to improve their chances of receiving a scholarship. The students who were chosen to com- pete in this contest were selected and agreed upon by all members of the English department during their junior year. The nominees then wrote and submitted both a creative work and an impromptu essay. Their essays were then judged by a statewide team of high school and college English teachers. This year, Jay Lechtman was recognized for his outstanding writing performance and was chosen to represent Marina. Finalist NCTE Finalist Jay Lechtman Press f Telegram The PressfTelegram Scholarships are awarded each year to the students who have displayed an excellence in their area of study or participation. The nominees are chosen by the faculty in each area of com- petition. Once chosen, the nominated stu- dents then advance to a district-wide com- petition and compete for a first place schol- arship of 750 dollars and a trophy as a recognition of their academic excellence.
