NCTE Each year, the National Council of Teachers of English sponsors a writing contest in which certain students are se- lected to compete. The purpose of this contest is to encourage students in their writing and then recognize those who have displayed an outstanding talent for writing. Although the NCTE has no funds to award scholarships to winners, they do print a listing of the winners and send it to over 3,000 colleges to improve their chances of receiving a scholarship. The students who were chosen to com- pete in this contest were selected and agreed upon by all members of the English department during their junior year. The nominees then wrote and submitted both a creative work and an impromptu essay. Their essays were then judged by a statewide team of high school and college English teachers. This year, Jay Lechtman was recognized for his outstanding writing performance and was chosen to represent Marina. Finalist NCTE Finalist Jay Lechtman Press f Telegram The PressfTelegram Scholarships are awarded each year to the students who have displayed an excellence in their area of study or participation. The nominees are chosen by the faculty in each area of com- petition. Once chosen, the nominated stu- dents then advance to a district-wide com- petition and compete for a first place schol- arship of 750 dollars and a trophy as a recognition of their academic excellence.
