Students Of The Year Students of the Year were chosen from previously select- ed students of the month based on their achievements over the last four years, with an emphasis on their senior year. Junior Class officers nominate candidates, who are then Kirsten Challman Kirsten has been involved in student government for three years, beginning in her sophomore year as class secretary and serving this year as ASB Secretary. She has served on numerous committees and been a member of many clubs, including AFS, CSF, Speech, Drama, Law, Anchor, Pep, and French clusb. She has been a member of the Varsity Swim Team. ln addition, Kirsten has received a Golden Shields nomination and donates time to local charities. Kristin Smith Kristin has served her classmates as class president for the last three years. Last year she was Overall Prom Chairman and Girls' State finalist. She has been active with the Homecoming and Masquerade dance committees, and a member of Medical Explorers, Polaris, and Law clubs. ln addition, she has been a member of Marina dance teams and has been involved with Youth Leadership for Action, Campus Clean-Up Committee, and Youth in Government Day. confirmed by Activities Director John Biere. Winners were named at the Viking Honor Banquet in May. For the first time in school history four students earned this honor. i Debbie Hirsch Debbie represented Marina at Girls' State last summer. She served as Commissioner of Activities and chairman of the Campus Clean-Up Com mittee. She has been active with the Speech and Drama Clubs, as well as Pep, Law, Spanish, Key, CSF, CTP, Anchor, and Polaris clubs. She participated in Youth in Government Day. An aspiring writer, Debbie has had works published in Runes and Teen Magazine. Debbie also finds the time to participate in church and community activities. Steve Spanovich Steve has balanced his service in student government with a busy athle- tic schedule. He followed his selection as Boys' State Representative with service as ASB President. He was a member of the Pepster Stuntman Squad as a junior. A competitive athlete, Steve has won numerous awards in swimming and has qualified six times for Southern California Junior Olympic. He is a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor for the city of Huntington Beach.
