The Social Studies department has always managed to maintain a high standard of education. The students at Marina seem to desire a high grade point average and the Social Studies department offers them such courses as CLS. History AP for juniors and World Geography Honors for the freshmen. So- cial studies has become an important part in our learning. More students take courses in this department mainly be- cause of the requirements needed for the colleges and the universities and also because they can learn the impor- tance of social studies in our society. To Mr. Pope, who teaches history and Eu- ropean history, social studies focus on understanding human beings and the so- ciety in the broadest sense meaning the global community called planet earth. lt teaches people in a democratic society to know how to think, how to judge an argument and evidence, and how to draw conclusions. The P.E. Department has a winning team of teachers with an even larger team of students. Many students take a variety of classes that the department has to offer, including basketball, soft- ball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, tennis, and raquetball. Physical educa- tion can be an exhausting experience, but it keeps the students in top physical shape and healthy so they can perform better in the classroom. Each year P.E. classes become more difficultg however, P.E. is not only for physical training, but it is also to teach students about the subject of physical education. Academics Ms. Gaeta looks forward to workouts with the drill team.
