Marina's English Department is main- ly concerned with these objectives: - to encourage students to receive and express their ideas effectively and to master fundamental communication skills and knowledgeg -- to expose students to a variety of ideas, social conventions, and modes of expressiong - to encourage students to examine critically past and present forms of in- ter-communication. - to provide students with understand- ing of a variety of aesthetic expressions and cultural activities. The English Department at Marina High School says Chairman Don Hohl, is the cornerstone of an effective aca- demic curriculum. For it is in the Eng- lish classes that students learn to LOVE to read, LOVE to write, and LOVE to develop their critical thinking skills. Maybe that's what out department stresses: LOVE FOR LEARNING. Academics Marina participates in recognition program The all-round excellence of Marina's pro- gram received attention this year as the school successfully participated in the Na- tional School Recognition Program. Based on a written report and an application, the school was selected one of ten top secon- dary schools in the State of California in February. Two-hundred and fifty schools advanced to a national screening, and Mari- na passed the first stage to become one of 140 to vie for further consideration as a model School. The competition brought many official visitors from State and Na- tional departments of education, as well as attention from newspaper and television reporters. Students, staff, and community alike stand to benefit greatly from the recogni' tion that participation in this program is bringing to our school! We can all be proud of the fine job we're doing!
