Back row: Chris Kasulka, Becky Dreyer, Heather Kirkup, Dawn Charroin, Liberty Brewster, Temre Kuester. The Marina Girls Basketball Team, coached by Mike Thornton, was the youn- gest varsity team to represent the school in any sport. They had a remarkably good season in many ways. Picked to finish the season in last place, the lady Vikings fin- ished in fourth ahead of Huntington and Westminster with a 3 and 7 Sunset League record. Close losses to league champion Fountain Valley Q41-375 and Edison Q50-49 in overtimej during the last two weeks of the season prevented the Vikings from go- ing to the playoffs. Sophomore Temre Kuester led the Vi- kings in scoring 10.4 P.P.G. and rebound- ing 6.7 per game during Sunset League action and was named 2nd Team Ayl League. Junior Heather Kirkup, the team's most versatile player, and senior captain Stephanie Sabelino were chosen Honorable Mention All League. Two freshmen, 6'1 center Dawn Charroin and 5'11 Liberty Brewster, were full or part-time starters for the Vikings. Both had outstanding years and promise Marina quite a future. Senior Denise Smith started much of the year at one of the guard spots. Stephanie Sabelino suffered a severe ankle injury early in the year sidelining her for six weeks. That in- jury hurt the Vikings considerably and probably cost them a winning record. The Varsity team's overall record was 10-15. Coach Terri Craft led the Junior Varsity team through a tough season, and they pulled through with team spirit. The team's most outstanding players were freshmen Kathy Stuppy and Dee Dee Sti- gar, and sophomore Peggy Sims. Their overall record was 11-12 and their league record was 3-7. 166 Girls Basketball iff! f f 4 fgziv i -2 W'U iZ Heather Kirkup sets up for a shot at a game against Ocean View. essentiall- Z

Pinning The Opponent Wrestling This year's Varsity Wrestling Team showed some outstanding talent, coached by Doug Belanger, Mark Ruiz, and Dave Abbott. These coaches spent long, strenu- ous hours working with the team. All this practice proved to be a very important ,.,, factor in the team's success. An important part of the team's preparation before they wrestle is self-confidence. This confidence comes from the team, as well as the coaches. When they get out on the mat, they're ready to do their best, and nothing less. There were many good wrestlers this year. Some were Eddie Ruiz, Troy Cloud, Rick Hunt, Mark Guedea, Sean Magula, Darren Bryant, Bobby Cole, and Richard Garcia. Troy Cloud took third in his weight class for Sunset League, and went to ClF for his second year in a row. The Frosh- Soph team did very well, too. An outstand- ing frosh wrestler was Bryson Benninger. Overall, there are many very good young wrestlers who have a lot of potential, and who will be awesome in years to Come, Varsity Team Row l tl-rj: Jeff Toler, Bobby Cole, Bryson Benninger, Eddie Ruiz.
