The Girls' Cross Country team was young this year, and with the larger amount of girls that it had, it was also strong. With the exception of outstanding runners Lisa Godfrey and Kristen Laakso, who are both juniors, the team was almost entirely made up of sophomores and fresh- men. This promises that the team will be better and stronger in the upcoming years. Coach Mike Butler led the team through the season and made them strong against their tough competition. Every team mem- ber gave their personal best to place the team in higher standings. X Race To The Finish Boys And Girls Cross-Country Marina's boys cross-country team fin- ished its season after the hard work of many of the members of the team. Var- sity members Paul Kessey, Jim May- nard, Brian Jewett, Willy Waldrop, Steve Saatjian, Sean Mc lntire and Jim Kroger lead the team with outstanding effort at the races and the invitationals. The Varsity team showed off its strength at the Fountain Valleyelnvita- tional where they placed ahead of most of the opposing teams. Holding up a strong Junior Varsity team were Scott Lane, Mike Moore, Young Kim, Steve Grabowski, Charlie Yu, Bob Borra, Marcus Sheldrake, Steve Anderson and David Kawamura. Jim Maynard came out as most valuable runner while Willie Waldrop was chosen team captain, Llnder the coaching of Jerry Alcorn, the boys cross-country team worked hard and showed a lot of spirit in their season. Aqua Vikes Varsity Water Polo The Varsity Water Polo team put togeth- er a number of firsts this year, For the first time ever, Marina laid claim to the Sunset League championship as they defeated their closest rival, Fountain Valley, by a score of 10 to 6. Their final record was a brilliant 22-4, Included was a CIF playoff victory over Tustin. They also put up a superb contest against Corona del Mar, but lost in the last 43 seconds by a score of 7-6. Leading the team were All-Americans Tom Warde and Steve Spanovich. Warde was the 4-A division leading scorer and Player of the Year in the Sunset League. Spanovich led the defense and was also named Second Team All-CIF. Scott Larsen, the third leading scorer and only a junior, was named Third Team All-CIF.
