Drill Team Shows E cellence Being a member of the 1984-1985 Valkari Drill Team is a high honor. Thirtyone Drill Team members were chosen in May of 1984. These members, along with the three captains practiced during the summer for three hours every weekday. They also attended a United Spirit Association Drill Team camp at UC Santa Barbara. The team was rewarded a first and superior place trophy. Seven returning members were part of the Olympic Drill Team. They performed at the Opening Cere- monies of the XXlllrd Olympiad held at the Los Angeles Colisseum. Llnder the direction of Jackie Gaeta, the Drill Team performed at pep rallies and showed us all their stunning precision and excellence in the half-time show, Music on the Move. The girls also performed in field competitions with the band and the Color Guard. At these competitions, our Drill Team received first and second places. All members agree that their awards for excellence were well worth the long hours of practice and hard work. Tall Flags Twirl To Victory Accompanying Marina's fine band is the award - winning colorguard. Many hours of exhausting practice resulted in superior achievements for the team throughout the year. During football season, the squad pre- pared and perfected its halftime show, every- day, 7th and 8th periods. After school and Saturday practices were not uncommon for the members either. Such rigorous practicing paid off for the colorguard when it entered half-time show competitions against other Southern California high schools. At the first competition, sponsored by Sierra Vista High School, the tall flags received an outstanding Sweepstakes award for their routine, along with the highest Showmanship score of the day, Led by Captain Joelle Carr and advisor Mindy Sanborn, Marina's colorguard per- formed at various pep rallies to promote school spirit, as well. Early in the summer, the flag team went to United Spirit Associ- ation tall flag camp. The main objective of this camp was to learn routines, then to per- form and be evaluated on them. At camp, Marina tall flags cheered for their school and won a Most Spirited School award, Subse- quently, the squad practiced for two months in preparation for the 1984 Olympics. Such workouts occurred almost everyday at either the Los Angeles Coliseum or El Segundo High School. This work was well worth it for the colorguard and the other 300 flag twirlers in- volved in the unforgettable Opening and Clos- ing Ceremonies of the XXlllrd Olympiad.
