Boys 81 Girls State Representatives Shawn Millbern CALIFORNIA BOYS' STATE California Boys' State was the most rewarding and exciting learning experience of my high school career. As citizens of a newly formed California Boys' State, myself and 800 other students organized and operated municipal, county, and state governf ments. Political rivalry was sharps thus deception, bargaining, and propaganda techniques were em- ployed to their fullest advantage. This total and realistic approach served as the springboard for the most complete and vivid education in politics and human relations that I shall ever receive. Quite often many of us found ourselves engaged in heated debate on current political issues. This open air of free discussion on political views and ideologies is what led this program to be so ex- tremely valuable to all those who participated. My personal thanks go out to the Seal Beach Leisure World and all members of the American Legion for making this program possible. y ii if I, . A ' WIFI! For eight days 544 girls lived together as sisters and shared a love unequaled to any I have ever experienced. All of the girls were separated into two parties: the Whigs and the Tories. Then 34 girls formed a city, three cities comprised a county, and all 544 of us made up the state of California. By using this set-up we formed our own city, county, and state governments. We ran for offices as would any candidate in our state. Through this learn-by-doing method we all became aware of how the government operates. In my city, Burnett, I served as a memeber of the Planning Commission. On the state level I became the only Orange County girl to be elected to the State Legislature where I served as an Assemblyman. While in the Assembly I was a member of the joint Committee to the Senate, Chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, and was defeated by one vote for the position of Assembly Speaker. Girls' State was a most gratifying experience and my warm thanks to all the people who made it possible to have such a magnificent program.
