One of these honors was being named Coach of the Year in the Sunset League. He was hon- ored thusly by the following or- ganizations: Daily Pilot Staff, Register Staff, and his fellow coaches of the Sunset League. Coach Stephens was also named Coach of the Year in Orange County by the Daily Pilot Staff.

1 No.1 Varsity Basketball No. 1 No.1 jim Stephens' conscientious coaching brought a thrilling season to basketball fans this year. The Viking Quintet of Bogdan, Speaks, Miller, Adams, and Losner secured the tough Sunset League title with only one loss during the entire season. Echoes of We're No. 1 carried over in- to the CIF play-offs, and the enthusiastic school support contributed to the victory over Compton in the first rounds of competi- tion. Under the dome of the Anaheim Conven- tion Center, the Vikings advanced a step further in the play-offs, closing out the Lancers of Sunny Hills. Finally, at Pauley Pavillion at UCLA, in a double over-time thriller, the Marina Five fell by two points to Los Alamitos. Marina High School will never forget the 1972 basketball season and the satisfaction of saying WE'RE NO. 1.
