Now, three full years later, that invention has developed into fifty stalwarts tspeech class lingo for depend- able workersl, two distinct groups, and a fully accredited class. To what is this suc- cess attributed? This year serves as an ex- ample of the bases for success. One of the foundations for this Winning Club might be called New Paces. Such accolade-coppers as ludy O'Brien, Dick Tarrant, Pat Wendell, Ken McTaggart, lrene Tobener and Sue Neiderholzer need no in- troduction into the Winner's Circle, since their names have been engraved on sundry trophies before. However, a whole new crop of up-and-coming stalwarts has sprung up in the Public Speaking Garden. Deanna Den- man, David M. Wilson, Melodie Yoell and Marty Tobener, among others, have been hailed as successful tournament participants as a result of their winning numerous tour- nament medals. A second element of favorable achieve- ments has been the number of Firsts For the very first time these three years, Marin Catholic came home with a Sweepstakes Trophy, the award to the school having the best performance at a tournament. Iubilant was Father Cummins to say the least. Moreover, within less than a month this jubilant speech coach became ecstatic when two sophomores, Sally Mullen and ory by reaching Melinda Krause, made hist the Final Plateau Debate Finals. These Firsts definitely contributed to the tre- mendous speech season. ,.-ff' Q. Last No- vember a glimmering golden trophy took permanent place in our trophy case. This Voice of Democracy accolade, won previous- ly by Bob Ferrera and Gayle Charles, was permanently acquired for Marin Catholic by Francine Rodgers, who represented Marin in the V.O.D. State Finals. The Lions Club Contest also has been dominated this year by our students, as have the American Le- gion and Native Sons Contests. Finalists in these competitions have been Bill Allen, Dave Wilson, Gayle Charles, Bob Hass. Considerable time is spent in Speech Class on these contestsg success has proved its own reward. The last, but not least, contributing factor to this successful year is disguised under the appearance of two energetic teachers, Father Cummins and Mr. Delury. Who knows but that through their patient instruc- tion in gesturing, speaking and discussing, there might blossom a future Bishop Sheen or Clare Booth Luce?
