For a century students have gone through the portals of a Marietta High School to take their places in the world. Many have gone on to prominenceg some even to fame. The others, each one in his own in- imitable way, have left traces of some significance. We hope that the Class of 1952 will bring renown to Our School, and in departing, leave behind footprints that per- haps another . . . Seeing, shall take heart again. This year we elected Jim Hastings as presidentg Ron Casto, vice president, and joy Cisler played a repeat performance as secre- tary-treasurer. The whole class was talking about a certain teacher's prediction concerning the hydrogen bomb, Mule Train, which rode the top of the Hit Parade for a long timeg some of our fellows playing varsity football, the first basketball homecoming, a feat of the Soph Y-teens and Hi-Y, thereby starting a tradition, the booths at the Carnival, Grand Ole Opry, with Minnie Pearl and Ernie Tubbg and a sideshow featuring some lively Hi-Y gals, all those parties, the Senior High Girls' Glee Club concerts, our first, and some more new additions to our class. With our graduation day still far in the future, we were happy go-lucky Sopohomores. As upperclassmen and Juniors, we looked forward to our very busy last two years. We got things started by white-washing our numerals all over town. A few of us almost blew up things after our meeting with the chem lab, but everybody survived the junior atomic bomb attacks, and the class went on to elect Bennie Cain president, Dan Torpy vice president, and Helen Harman secretary-treasurer. Now the parking lot seemed crowded, for the juniors h.ad come of age and were driving. So you remember that one of us won a speech contest? And the Homecoming parade? Homecoming had more meaning this year because we were part of the team. Santa Claus and our class Hoat came in early in the Thanksgiving parade. Then the snow came down and down and down and the town shoveled its way out and school resumed, only to let out again for Christmas vacation which brought tired feet for some and presents for all. Do you remember the Y-teen Tea Dance, the Hi-Y parties, and New Year's Eve? In January came our class rings-bright and shiny, the symbol that at last we were Juniors. Do you remember the Junior play and jail at the Carnival? We were managing the Carnival this year, and our candidates were voted to reign as king and queen at the basketball game. We picked our representatives to Girls' and to Boys' States in this year and our editors for the 1952 Orian. Remember our play Dolly Dittenfeffern? One more step in our money making scheme toward the Prom. The Prom, our Prom, Pink Spring, May 12th. After great preparation we started the day of decorating, of arguments, of hard work, of tired feet, of hectic rush, and of last minute changes, until at last all was completed. That night couples danced to the music of Johnny Leonard, and the king and queen were crowned. The lucky eleven were chosen from our class for National Honor Society and more of us were admitted to Quill and Scroll or National Thespian Society. The class picnic at Masonic Park with its baseball and football games was our last official get-together as Juniors. We looked forward to our last year at Marietta High School. And now Seniors! The last year that seemed so far away, five years ago was upon us, bring- ing work for all. We elected Jack Carleton to serve .as president of the Senior Class, Alan Edwards as vice president, and Shirley Thompson as Secretary-treasurer. Work started right away on the 1952 Orian by the staff picked last year. The Original was edited by a Senior, and although threatened by lack of subscriptions, came out better than before. Early in November came the well-remembered Homecoming. Rain, snow, and ice made it the coldest in years. Half-time ceremonies were held in the midst of a snow storm, but, in spite of the weather, our class float won second prize and the queen was crowned. Homecoming brought the close of football se.ason and the beginning of basketball and Thanksgiving vacation. In December came snow and the annual Christmas assembly. january and the flood with a week's vacation wound up the first semester's work. Soon after, the Seniors were tapped for National Honor Society. Our first semester seemed to go extra fast. Our catch words were Don't know, do you? , Let's check and You said that right. Now the tense is changing from past to present and we are counting the days left. The Senior Recognition Assembly, Baccalaureate, .and finally, Graduation are coming too quickly. And for the first time our class, the Centennial Class, is learning the meaning of unity, the real meaning of co-operation as we work toward graduation and think of that day when we, Seniors till the last minute and a whole class for the last time, will receive our diplomas and join the other ranks of June graduates, and separate from each other. Meetings were held the first Tuesday of each month, with interesting pro- grams provided by selected committees. In October the members collected a box of clothing to send as a Christmas gift to a family in Spain. The club made plans to go caroling at Christmas, but bad weather interfered. Later, in January, a party was held at Mrs. Guthrie's in place of the carol- ing. As the last activity of the year, the group presented a Pan-American Day assembly on April 14. DAS ABENTEUER DER NEUJAHRSNACHT In olden times in Germany, when there were few clocks, the night-watchman was an important functionary, whose stick or pike was a symbol of public order and who sang the hour like this: Listen, folks, and let me tell: Twelve has struck and all is well. Youth and Government Day For the third straight year Youth and Government was one of the biggest activities of the Senior Hi-Y Clubs. It was made possible through the help and effort of Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Mullenix, and Mr. Runkel. On the day of the assembly, February 20, the gymnasium was decorated with numerous signs of each party. During the assembly Ted Hurst, Nationalist party ch.airman, and Federalist party chair- man, Raynald Lane, introduced their candidates for the city offices. Speeches were given by Dick Britton and Jim Delong, the candidates for Mayor and President of Council, respectively, on the Nationalist Ticket, also giving major speeches were Bill Weihl, Federalist candidate for Mayor and Jack Carleton, candidate for President of Council on the Federalist Ticket. Political entertainment in the assembly included: Feds from Fenus, The Singing Cowboy, A Minstrel Act, and an assassina- tion skit. The results of the election held the following day showed the Federalist Party sweeping into office, winning every office except City Treasurer. On the opposite page is our ll0 piece 1952 band directed by Mr. Grover Buxton. This is one of the most prominent organizations in Marietta High School, as it is called upon to par- ticipate in so many civic affairs. With its spectacular formations at football games, its varied programs in assemblies, and its smaller groups which furnish much of the pep for basketball games it is an integral part of our school life. 4397 Musical Organizations Whether it is choir, Senior High Girls' Glee Club, or Girls' Ensemble, the enter- tainment can be depended upon to be interesting and worthwhile. These three vocal organizations for senior high students are busy all year, performing at assemblies and other events. The choir presents annual Christmas and spring concerts and a pop concert, in addition to making other public appearances. The Glee Club, open to any girl who wants to sing, joins the choir in its two yearly concerts, while the Girls' En- semble is a unit in itself, composed of girls carefully selected from the choir. For the junior high student, the ninth grade choir and seventh and eighth grade Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs offer chances for fun and training for the senior high organizations. Miss Minoma Benson has given unselfishly of her time and talents to the direc- tion of these fine organizations. She is assisted by Miss Snively, who also directs the orchestra. l95I-52 Choir President .,.,,.,..,.. .. .. ..i. ,. .... ,.,., ,,,, ,....,.., . . . Don, a 155 pound sophomore, was a unanimous choice for the first defensive team. Four other M. H. S. boys received honorable mention. Ron Casto was the third choice of the writers at center, and the other boys named were tackle Bob Hall, guard Ron Weethee, and halfback Glenn Davis. All are seniors, except Davis and Dotson, who are sophomores. This year's varsity team was a powerhouse Sometimes they forgot the fact, other times a brick wall couldn't stop them. This team chock full of seniors from the 100th graduating class compiled a record of 3 wins and 6 defeats. glolp Hiebel This team in 1907 shows little comparison to the Tigers of the 1951 team, in equipment, uniforms, or coaching, but they both did have the fight and sportsmanship for IVI. His floor work and defensive play were tops, and he could always be counted on to do his best. DWIGHT WAGGONER Lefty was our team's sur- prise package, this year. He was one of the squad's top scorers and had a left hand shot that was hard to stop. He will be missed next year. DON LOWE Faker, besides breaking all records for scoring, helped to lead his teammates to victory with his accurate passing. He was exceptionally good at scor- ing under the basket. He is a prize prospect for college bas- ketball. DOUG ROWLAND Scrap from the word go, Doug was the sparkplug of the squad. His quickness and aggressiveness always kept his opponents on their toes. This is his last year, and his place will be hard to fill. DAVID O'BRIEN OB played his part of the scoring unit and fighting to the finish, by a combination of pass- ing, pivoting, and dribbling, forced the ball to a scoring position. Everyone is sorry that this is his last year with the HAROLD MULLEN Harold was a de- pendable reserve who improved game by game. He had a tre- mendous push shot. Harold Bgures definite- ly in next year's plans. DAVE LENINGTON BILL McVEY Bill was a reliable substitute, and could turn in .a good job when needed. He will be back next year. One of the team's top scorers, M. H. S. squad. jon Movlans Joe was another reserve, but he should be a great help to the Tigers in 1953. BOB PUGH Bob turned in sev- eral good performances and showed improve- ment each time. He will also strengthen the team next year. ALLAN MEYER Alan was our tall man, Dave played hard and played to win. He was a great com- petitor. Dave will be greatly welcomed when the season rolls around next year. GLENN DAVIS jeep was one of the most valuable players on the team. He showed tremendous speed and fight, which made him a thorn in the side of any opponent. JOHN WEIHL John was one of those valuable players who do not start the games, but can be counted upon to turn in a good, steady job whenever they are needed. 41071 towering above all other play- ers. Able, conscientious, and hard working. While at center he could be depended upon to get the tip-off. Watch him in 1953. JOE HADDOX Joe proved to be a good replacement as he saw action in almost every game. He is a good shot and shows great promise for next year. This year they have especially enjoyed Play Days, when they invite girls from other schools to have a day of play. These girls have shown great promise in the round-robin tournaments in volley ball, as well as in softball and basketball. To these girls we say, Keep up the good work! JUNIOR G. A. A.
