On this hundredth anniversary we leave our high school days behind us and start out into the world in the search of success and hap- piness in much the same Way as those pioneers sought gold. Published by S E N I O R C L A S S Of M arf ctta H ti gh School Dedication In appreciation of all he has done for our school, We Wish to dedicate this book to Mr. McClure. In spite of his various duties, which he performs with his char- acteristic boundless energy, he still has time to smile. So the '49ers say thanks to Mac for helping to make their high school days more memorable. They trust that Philip's lottery ticket may win the grand prize. Rosie has a lovely new party dress, a gift of the Countess, but Philip has to relinquish the party to act as nightwatchman for his ailing father. The merry crown prince, coming from the royal masked ball, chances to meet Philip as he calls out the hours. When the prince demands that they exchange robes and roles for half an hour, Philip is forced to accept or offend his Royal Highness. While Philip is at the masked ball, he succeeds in reconciling the estranged Countess Bonau and the Count Chamberlain and threatens to expose an ambitious nobleman who aspires to be Prime Minister and hopes to attain it by bribing the Crown Prince to use his influence with the King. Meanwhile the Crown Prince has been going from street to street singing verses about the dishonest oflicials of his father's court. Rosie, hearing the nightwatchman, believes it is Philip and, seeing the heavy money bag he carries, thinks they have won the grand prize. The slandered officials have Philip and the Prince arrested before they can exchange clothes. After much anxiety, Philip is exonerated and he and Rosie receive not only the bag of money from the Prince but from the King the promise of a position as castle gardener with a home on the royal estate. Bottom Row: Mr. Karl Hiebel, Mr. C. J. McClure. Coaches MR. SUTTON Mr. Sutton is the oldest member of our coaching staff. Squat , as he is better known, has served twenty-five years as coach at M. H. S. and truly de- serves the title of Dean of Ohio Coaches. Mr. Sutton started with only three lettermen and turned out a good ball club by the end of the season. The boys like to work for the Coach and appreciate the training he gives them. No other school in the state can boast of a mentor as faithful and loyal to athletics as Mr. Sutton. We are indeed grateful for his wonderful service. MR. GLAZIER This is Mr. Glazier's sixth year at Marietta High School. In this time he has turned out some great track teams. It has been said that Cliff is one of the greatest track coaches in the country, and I'm sure you'll agree. Cliff works with his boys almost the year around to get them to be as good as they are. He has been a source of inspiration to all the boys he has tutored on the cinder paths. We hope he will stick with us for many years. ROBERT MANNING Mr. Manning came to us this year from Ravens- wood, where he produced some good football and bas- ketball teams. He is head coach of football and also coach of the eighth grade basketball. Mr. Manning stresses good condition, hard playing, and the will to win. We wish him the very best of luck in his future years as head football coach. MR. MCCLURE Mr. McClure has served M. H. S. this year in a double role as faculty manager and as assistant basket- ball coach. Mac has spent many tiresome hours caring for equipment, arranging schedules, and plan- ning trips for the team. He did a creditable job coach- ing the Junior Varsity also. We are fortunate to have a hard worker like Mac in our athletic department. 110 MR. BELL Mr. Bell is another new addition to the coaching staff this year. He assists Manning as backfield coach. He was graduated from Muhlenberg, where he was a star quarterback last year. The boys who were under Bill's guidance liked him and worked hard for him. We welcome a man like Mr. Bell as a coach at M. H. S. MR. DUVALL Bert served as coach of the ninth grade basketball team this year. It is his job to teach the boys the fundamental plays of the game. Because of his friendly attitude the boys under him like him very much. We hope Bert will continue to stay with us on our coaching staff. MR. ANNASENZ Mr. Annasenz served as coach of the ninth grade football team this year. Under his coaching, this team went undefeated. Through Mr. Annasenz's efforts gi. H. S. can expect some good football teams in the uture. U H MR. BOLIN Mr. Bolin has been here at M. H. S. for four years. His fine record as assistant football and track coach and reserve basketball coach speaks for itself. It is through his efforts the future teams are built. Mr. Bolin is indeed an important figure in the athletic department. MR. HIEBEL Mr. Hiebel has acted as Junior High football coach and Seventh Grade basketball coach. It is his task to teach the youngsters the fundamentals of the games. Although there isn't the glory connected with the junior high coaching, Mr. Hiebel enjoys it because he likes to work with boys. This year he also successfully man- aged the Junior High Basketball Tournament. We appreciate the work done by Mr. Hiebel. S. football team, under the able coaching of Mr. Manning, ended up on the short end of nine game schedule. The team this year had a never say die spirit and deserves a lot of credit. The team, lacking experience, just couldn't materialize the breaks they got into touchdowns. Dick developed from an end to an effective halfback this year. He did the punting for the Tigers. With his speed and his other abilities he proved to be one of the outstand- ing players. Dick will graduate in June. CHARLES SKIPTON-Halfback. Chuck was a dependable player both on offense and defense. He was a hard runner and a hard tackler. This is Chuck's second year of varsity ball, and he will be playing again next year. l CHARLES WILSON-Fullback. Bad Charley playing his first year of varsity ball got his nickname be- cause he was a hard-hitting ball carrier. He is a junior this year and will be an important figure on next year's team. RICHARD BUZZARD--Quuxrterback. Dick had the task of operating the team from a T Formation and did a good job. He received an eye injury in the early part of the season, which caused him to miss a couple of games. He leaves us this year. . ' Second Row : 1. 2. 3. 4. ELVIN SCHENKEL--End. Bud was the youngest player on the Tiger squad this year. Although he lacked experience, he did a good job. Bud has two more years to serve the Orange and Black forces. JOHN HASTINGS-Tackle. Cupcake played a consistent game and was a good blocker. He played for the good of the team and not for personal glory. John received a leg injury which kept him out of several games. He wears the cap and gown in June. RALPH MOONEY-Center. Ralph was the biggest man on the team this year. He got more than his share of the tackles. Ralph was in there fighting the whole game regardless of the score. He played good ball all season and leaves a place to be filled next year. w ROBERT MCCRACKEN-Guard. Bob was the most stubborn man on the line. Not only did he keep the opposition from getting through the line on offense, but the opposition couldn't-keep him down on defense. Bob will be back next year stronger than ever. . ' Third Row: 1. Q PAUL WANZO-Gurvrd. Frankie was a great mainstay on the forward wall. He was a hard man to keep down and was a hard tackler. Paul plays for the enjoyment of it. He will be back again next year. BERNARD GREGORY-Trwkle. Bernard was in there fighting all the time, regardless of the score. Along ' -with his great spirit he was a good blocker and a good tackler. This is his last year playing for the Tigers. 3. 4. Fo 1. 2. 3. EARL MORRIS-Tackle. Earl started the season playing fullback and was placed on the line because of his size and toughness. He could make it rough for the opposition when the going got hot. Earl will be back again next year. WILLIAM SCHENKEL-Emi. Bill played the end opposite his brother. Although he lacked experience he was in there trying. He will be back next year to show us some real football playing. 1 rth. Row' 1, . HAL CHAMBERLAIN-Guard. Although Hal didn't see a lot of action, he played enough to get his letter. When he was in the game, he was a real scrapper with a great spirit. Hal is a senior. RONALD SCHROEDER-Halfbuck. Ronnie was a reliable replacement in the backfield. He is a small boy but makes up for his size in his speed and drive. Ronnie will be back next year to see a lot of action. OTHER MEMBERS WHO DID NOT RECEIVE LETTERS DICK ELLISg 4. DAVE DRENNEN. Fifth. Although they won but five of the twenty games during their season, they always had the fight and spirit of ei championship team, regardless of the score. The team was seriously lack- ing in height, but they' made up for it with speed and fight. . Nov. Dec. li Sl CK KK ll Jan.
