Membership is based on points awarded for interscholastic competition in debate, original oration, dramatic, humorous, and oratorical declamations, extempore speaking, and participation in public speaking before adult audiences. For example, a non-decision debate grants a student but one point. Membership requires twenty points for the first degree of merit. At the present time Carl Bender, James Runkel, Elihu Goldish, and Joann Maxson have received, or are eligible to receive, the degree of merit. Two students, Paul Riemann and Carol Sullivan, hold the second degree, the degree of honor, which requires more than Hfty points. One member, Currene Riggs, holds the third degree, the degree of excellence, which requires one hundred points and has as her goal the achievement of the highest degree, the degree of distinction. To do this, a student must acquire two hundred points before graduation. In the seventeen years that Marietta has been a member of the National Forensic League, less than a dozen students have acquired the degree of distinction. Currene Riggs has had three years of varsity debate, and Paul Riemann and Carol Sullivan had participated in tournaments the previous year. ln addition, Elihu Goldish, James Runkel, and Richard Wfilliams had had some experience the prior year. Practice debates were scheduled with Nelsonville, Athens, and Zanesville. Those participating on the aflirmative side were Carol Sullivan, Joann Maxson, and Sally Wfhitaker. Those participating on the negative side were Currene Riggs, Paul Riemann, Elihu Coldish, and James Runkel. At the Hrst tournament in Newark, the team suffered a defeat. It marked the first time in over twenty consecutive tournaments in which the Marietta team had not been in the running in Hrst or second place. However, at the time of going to press, the team is determined to make a better showing at the district National Forensic League tournament scheduled March 22 and 23 at Dayton-Oakwood High School. The question for debate was, Resolved: That Every Able-Bodied Male Citizen Should Have at Least One Year of Military Training Between the Ages of 18 and 24. Numerous public appearances and additional practice debates have been scheduled for the debate squad for the second semester. Mr. Bolin has shown that he is a capable coach by his work with the junior high football team and the reserve basketball team. Through his coaching the reserve basketball team is ready for a varsity role. MR. RUNKEL This year Mr. Runkel coached the re- serve football team and the seventh grade basketball team. At the beginning of the season his football team wasn't much to boast of, but by hard work and good coach- ing Luke was able to turn out a winning team showing much promise. Mr. Runkel has coached at M. H. S. for thirteen years. MR. GLAZIER During the three-years he has been at M. H. S., Mr. Glazier has turned out some fine track teams. All the boys he has worked with like Cliff because he is a hard worker and seems to be one of them. lVe wish him much success with many good teams in the future. MR. MCCLURE Mr. McClure, better known as Mac, had a good season this year with his ninth grade basketball team. The boys show great prom- ise as future players thanks to his work as their coach. Because he has a ready smile PAGE EIGHTY-EIGHT and a good sense of humor, Matin is well liked by everyone. MR. SUI l'ON During the thirty years he has done coaching, Mr. Sutton has turned out some very hne teams. This year his football team showed much spirit even though it lacked the knack of winning games, Through much hard work and careful instruction, Mr. Sutton coached a winning basketball team that made an excellent record. To Coach Sutton we extend many good wishes for the continued success of his teams. MR. ROSENBUSCH Mr. Rosenbusch coached the eighth grade basketball team this year. Even though his boys played only a few games, he spent much time and hard work teaching them the fundamentals of basketball. Having a good coach like Rosie for the younger boys promises good teams in the future. MR. HIEBEL Mr. Hiebel, who has been at M. H. By helping the boys who needed help most and by offering good advice, he did much toward making good football and basketball teams for M. H. S. It takes a lot of work and practice to have a good, peppy cheerleading squad. Fad Fashions of 'LL6 The stage is set. Soft music is playing in the distant orchestra pit. The great production of 1946 is almost ready to be presented. XfVh1le the cast is making last minute changes and touch ups I will give you a preview of our play: The fad fashions of '46, they say, are really very neat So lend your eye and we'll give you quite a treat. ACT I: A Sunny Afternoon at Brunicardik The gang is draped around a table eating gooey sundaes and banana splits. They are talking about all that has happened and all that is going to happen. All at once the door opens. All eyes turn. Lo and behold, it's Miss Senior Lass! Now she's a slick chick with a quick trick as every one knows. She is dressed in the typical garb of the set. They all look from the top of her well groomed head to the tip of her saddleshod feet. She wears a pleated skirt and a size forty sweater. A string of pearls is around her neck and a dozen small bangle brace- lets on her arms. All the fellows sigh and think what a lovely dish she is. Somelof the other girls wear jeans and big white shirts or the ever popular plaid shirt. The most popular shoes are loafers, nioccasins, saddle shoes, or Joyce playshoes. All of the girls love pastel sweaters and cardigans. Every girl loves a jacket, and a blazer fills the bill. Bobby soxers are the talk of the nation and l guess that means us. The kids know how to look glamorous also. Look at them some Sunday night. Drool. ACT II: The Smoke Shop The fellows exert all of their extra energy playing pool. The fellow of the girls' dreams is Senior Sam. His favorite dress is a wool shirt or a bright sweater. Figured sweaters with reindeer, etc., are the most popular. He wears checked pants and loafers. Everybody looks neat and feels wonderful about the whole thing and is always ready to laugh and have a good time. The curtain is ready to drop on another great performance which seems to be a huge success. All feel a little relieved but there is a sadness in the air because a great play has just been produced.
