XfVe have tried to depict your school life and activ- ities so realistically that, in later years, great enjoyment will still emanate from the pages of this book. Although the work on this book was greatly impeded, namely by rationing and the great delay in getting started, we have accomplished what seemed im- possible. These obstacles were overcome o11ly by the full cooperation of all the members of the stall and the faculty advisers. Candler, head of the mathematics department, who passed away on -january l, 19-14, we reverently dedicate this page of the Orian. Mr. Cancller, known affectionately to most students as Pop , was both a teacher and a scholar olf the highest caliber. As a teacher, he maintained a high scholastic standard, to which many alumni can attribute their success. Mr. Candler had a number of scholarly hobbies in which he was very much interested, among them being astronomy and the Greek language. He was an ardent radio fan. He and Mrs. Candler had worked together in this Held. Mrs. Candler was the first amateur woman radio operator in the United States and as such had her picture in Who's VVho . At one time Mr. Candler carried on research work for the government, checking' on radio tubes. YfVe in Marietta High School will probably remember Mr. Candler best for his long and faithful service to the Orian. He served for thirteen years as its director. Mr. Candler is sincerely missed by students and faculty. ... 5 ..
