LOLclClti'Q'5. Qltttei, and Ofmvflw Since 1972, class after class of stu- dents have graduated from Marcos de Niza amidst a variety of world events. This year, like all others, has been filled with both sad events and great happen- ings. One of these special occurrences was the rededication of the Statue of Liberty. New York City hosted a 1986 bash, honoring the first one hundred years of this American landmark on Elis Island. Another event, not quite so happy an occasion, also made the headlines. The worst dry spell on record spread throughout the southeast. As a result, many farmers were on the brink of ruin. An international newsmaker in- volved Soviet U.N. employee, Genna- diy Zakharov who was arrested on a New York subway platform and ac- cused of s ying. A week later, Nicholas S. Danilofgan American journalist, was captured in the Soviet Union, and ac- cused of being an American spy. Weeks later, after extensive diplomatic negoti- ations, both men were released. This event was followed b a two-day summit in Iceland. Despite high hopes for the meeting, President Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev reached an impasse on testing of Star Wars weaponry. America's eyes were also turned to- ward two great social events. In july, Caroline Kennedy was married to Ed- win Scholossberg, a New York busi- nessman. This was followed closely by the marriage of Britain's Prince An- drew, the queen's second son, who took Sarah Ferguson, popularly known as Fergie, for his wife. These elaborate weddings were only two of the happy events that contrast- ed the trying events of the year.
