5? E 1,44 ,V ,--1,.n-'t ?-'Wim-.,. 56' I gig HE hAarcos Honored I think we're as good as any high school in the state, and I think we de- serve to have the community and the students know that. This was the reac- tion of Dr. Fitzgerald when he heard of Marcos' award as one of the top high schools in the state. Presenting the award in January was Diane Bishop, Su- perintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Arizona. The annual award was shared with five other state high schools, including Dobson High, Chan- dler High, Flowing Wells, Arcadia, and Baboquivari High. A citizen task force rated all of the thirty-three applicants and chose Mar- cos on the following qualities: ' A program involving all faculty in decision-making seminars. ' A drug and alcohol abuse program for students students. ' An English-for-Foreign-Students program, involving students from eigh- teen countries. ' A staff development program. ' A strong emphasis on teaching critical-thinking skills. English department head, Mrs. Kath- erine Watson, was the main instigator in getting Marcos' application submit- ted. lt's very much like an extended family on our campus, and our slogan this year for our students and faculty is We all Belong, and that is, to me, the greatest strength of our school. That term is not used as a gimmickf it is really felt from the heart. tExcerpts from Tempe Daily News, 1-27-877 Top: Sophomore Kim Courtney loses her con- centration during an in-class assignment.
