With the exper- ience of six returning players, the team had a successful record of 7-4-3. Ac- cording to Coach jack Smythe, the key players were Eric Weikert, Warren Ge- sin, jeff Gill, and Ryan Harper. Coach Smythe attributed their success to Success Warren Gesin's chipping, john Rein- hardt's punts, Mike Chalmers' all- around spirit, and jeff Gill's half-time inspirational anecdotes. According to player Eric Weikert, Coach Smythe in- fluenced the attitudes of the players both on and off the field. He stressed sportsmanship and good judgment. According to Coach Morino, The players learned how to work as a team. The season was a rough one, but the team never lost its spirit. The team cap- tain was Eric Swagel. Leading scorers were Eric Swagel, Mark Moser, and Scott Bell. Leading rebounders were jim Mancuso and Brent Karnig. These new athletes will provide a valuable base on which to build next year's Varsity team. Their victories in- ::E:f.g!-fssj'-2 -:Z 2: .: Z' ' 1:25 fr .....e:..:a:,..-.:...: .2 88 season cluded defeats over Corona and Chan- dler. The Freshman Boys' Basketball Team celebrated a winning season due to the dedication and persistence of Coach Matwick. This year's team captains were Paul Eyler and Chris Lopez. The leading scorer and rebounder was Mark Tobler, averaging fourteen bas- kets and thirteen rebounds per game. They excelled in defense as well as offense. With the same skills and atti- tudes, the team may enjoy similar suc- cess as a junior varsity team next year. Top scorer, Eric Swagel, defends Marcos against the McClintock Chargers. Sports 169
