Below: Senior Melissa johnson gets ready to set the ball to a teammate during a varsity volleyball game. Leadership and Teamwork Bring St The Marcos de Niza Varsity Volley- ball team developed into one of the competitive forces in the division fol- lowing a building year in 1985. With five returning players, the volleyball team matured into a winner, beating all but one of its last six opponents. We pulled together at the end of the year because of hardwork, practice, and teamwork, said junior player Becky Witter. With such success, coach Carrie Boyles enthusiastically remarked, The program is on an upswing, and the rong Fini h coaching staff is looking forward to many more great seasons. She attri- butes their 6-10 record to hardwork on fundamentals and positive leadership by the seniors. The outstanding players for the sea- son were veterans Melissa johnson and Melissa Beamsley. The other members of the team were sophomores lenny Malasnik, Nicole Young, juniors Becky Witter, Leann Lawrence and seniors Carmelle Hayes, Tammi Porter, Deanna Morenzoni, Katie Rasmussen, and Kelly Ray. The j.V. offense was led by jim Man- cuso at quarterback. Mancuso passed to Shane Boisjolie, Drew Colby, Troy Gray, Angelo Toliver, and Steve Cham- bers. Mike Molina and Charlie Moreno were the leading rushers. They were joined in the backfield by Robby Bajar- ano, and Gabriel Abril. The offensive line, consisting of jon Gompert, Bruce Binkley, Chris jones, john Manolio, Rob johnson, and Doug Mousser, af- forded Mancuso the time necessary to get the play off. The tight ends were Scott Bell and Tim Mollineaux. Rick Anderson, a defensive standout, also played the position. On defense, the junior Varsity was led by Mike Moore at strong safety and Mike Bolvin, a lineman. Other defen- sive players included Danny Martinez, Roy Vizcarra, Doug Mousser, john Manolio, jon Gompert, Mike Molina, Ken Vogelsang, Adam Butler, Bill Rod- gers, and Shane Boisjolie. Freshman quarterback Mark Tobler summed up the Freshman Football sea- son saying, We started off kind of slow, but improved and ended the season with a pretty good record. The fresh- men went 4-4, defeating four straight opponents. Tobler directed the of- fense, often giving the ball to Dave Col- born, the leading rusher for the fresh- men. On defense, the freshmen were led by john McCulloch. The explosive defense shut out both Chandler and Willis. junior Varsity head coach jim Rance said, There was a lot of improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. With continued improvement, they should help Varsity next year. Above left: Charlie Moreno picks up yards against Mesa in a j.V. Game.
