'- my f4,, W Male Cheerleaders Spark School Spirit For the first time ever in Marcos de Niza history there were not only female cheerleaders, but male cheerleaders as well. The addition of male cheerleaders allowed for better and more exciting stunts. The male cheerleaders added to the varsity squad this year were Troy Gray, Adam Phillips, Brandon West, and Steve LaLonde. I've hada lot of fun being a cheerleader and I know every- one else has, stated Adam Phillips. Cheerleaders promoted school spirit in every way this year. The varsity squad must be commended for their superb performance this year seeing as there were no varsity cheerleaders returning from last year. Cheer has made our sen- ior year really special and we're all go- ing to miss it, said the senior varsity cheerleaders. The cheer sponsor, Ms. Linda LaFon- tain, started coaching here at Marcos in the early 70's beginning with the pom pon line. When asked what helped make the squad so successful, LaFon- tain stated, Each cheer squad is unique as are the individuals on the squad. Of course cheer is not just fun and games. The cheerleaders had practice every morning at 6:30, sometimes they even worked out with the ASU cheer- leaders. Overall, the cheerleaders' dedication was felt throughout the school. Spo rts 0151

Varsity Football Apollo McClintock Corona del Sol Mountain View Dobson Mesa Chandler Westwood Moon Valley Tempe Opp. MdN 21 33 20 29 13 20 20 21 27 7 41 22 37 19 30 21 27 7 30 31 McClintock Defeat Brings City Title The Varsity Football team beat its first four opponents, but then slipped to a 5-5 record. They defeated the other three Tempe High Schools, including a win over McClintock for the first time since 1973. The Padres were led by Willy Lira, one of the top-ranked quarterbacks in the state, and jeff Haugen at wide re- ceiver. The 29-20 victory over McClintock marked the first such win for Coach Castro in the seven years he has been the Head Coach at Marcos. The game was especially sweet for this year's largely senior team after the defeat suf- fered to McClintock last year. In the third game, the Padres soundly defeated Corona del Sol, 20-13, fol- lowed by a close win, 21-20, over Mountain View in which junior Barry julian replaced an injured Willy Lira at quarterback. Although the team slipped, it came back to defeat Tempe in a close 31-30 final game, winning the City Championship from McClintock for the first time in thirteen years Willy Lira reflected the general feeling of the team when he stated, We started off really good, . ., landj since we finished strong, it was a successful season. Other team leaders this year included Sean Warren, Bary julian, jeff Sanuik, and Rowell Ashford. jeff Sanuik and Paul Landrum led the team in rushing yard- age. The two backs and Sean Warren accounted for most of the ground yardage and much of the success the team experienced. Receivers jeff Haugen and Mario Ri- ley were also important contributors to the team. These two, with tight ends Dave Moser and Bryan Hooks, were the long yardage gainers and also scored many of the touchdowns this year. Top: Paul Landrum heads for a touchdown.
