Popular classes also beneficial An elective everyone seems to enjoy is Physical Education. The classes vary from Beginning Physical Education, which is mainly taken the Freshman year, to Advanced weight training and net classes. Beginning Physical Educa- tion is a requirement for all Freshmen. According to Mrs. Hoke, We feel it is just as important to teach the body as well as the mind. After the one year required in Physical Education, many upperclassmen elect to continue in P.E., taking weight training and net classes, which are open for Sopho- mores, juniors and Seniors. Another popular elective at Marcos is Drivers Education. A high percentage of students take Driver's Ed their Soph- omore year since students are legally permitted to drive at age sixteen. Dri- verfs Education teaches students de- fensive driving skills and basic knowl- edge. Another valuable class available is Behind the Wheel, in which an instruc- tor takes students out with a car rather than only a simulator and provides ac- tual hands-on experience. In reference to the level of student participation, Mr. Adler said, This year there is more input from students during lectures in the Classroom. Academics 139

But according to Mrs. Crane, one of the Home Economics teachers, This class is for girls and boys alike. For instance, if a person were not married, and he did not know how to cook, he might end up eating out every night which could get expensive. There are more classes in the Home Economics Department than just Foods. There is Sewing 'I-2-3-, which is a semester class, and Home Design will teach how to do things like an interior decorator. Child Development teaches how to raise a child if one gets married. A new class, Fashion Merchandise Cen- ter, is only offered for juniors and Sen- iors. Home Economics Related Occu- pation, or H.E.R.O., is a class in which students worked outside of class for a credit. H.E.R.O. is only offered to Sen- iors. Other classes include Personal Awareness, for freshman and sopho- mores, and Human Realation is for lu- niors and Seniors. A whole lot of kids get involved with this class mainly be- cause the more work they do, the more things they get in return, such as foods. The more time kids put into some- thing, the students get just as much things back, said Mrs. Crane. Many kids enjoy Home Economics and Mrs. Crane hopes that everyone else will as welll Academics
