Program Growth-Buildings, Teachers The Social Studies Department's main ob- jective was to educate students about histo- ry, people and cultures on the national and international scale. Current events played a big role in this. Teachers also prepared the students for the ACT and SAT examinations. In order to graduate, students are re- quired to take certain Social Studies courses each year. These include Global Studies the Sophomore year, American History the ju- nior year and Arizona History, American Government, and Free Enterprise for the Senior year. Geography, Criminal justice and Psychology are offered as electives. Honors classes for junior and Senior re- quirements are also available. Mr. Yniguez, Social Studies department head, has strong feelings toward the stu- dents studying more. We feel the students need to read more.-Not only to prepare them for college, but for what the future holds. The Science department is excitedly awaiting the completion of the new build- ing. Because of overcrowding, many phys- ical Science classes were held in the Biology labs. Next year, the physical Science classes will be in the new building, leaving the Biol- ogy labs open for more experimental work. Science courses were offered at different levels, from remedial courses through the honors level to meet the needs of all stu- dents. All courses were available at three different levels. On October 23, 1986, Mr. Malcolm Wells was presented a Presidential Award for Ex- cellence in Science and Mathematics. He received a grant of S5000 to be used in any way to improve the Science and Math de- partment. Mr. Wells is using the money to fund a new program for incoming Freshman minority students. The purpose of Wells' new program is to encourage minority stu- dents to take more demanding college pre- paratory courses on campus. Students par- ticipating in the program will take a com- bined Algebra and ChemfPhys. course in a two-hour block. Mr. Wells has wanted this program for quite some time and is looking forward to its implementation. Academics 0 135
