As head of the Math department, Mr. Lassen is responsible for evaluating the Math teachers, ordering and bud- geting for the department, and assign- ing classes and rooms. Mr. Lassen said l'm very lucky in that I have great teachers to work with. The math de- partment is very experienced and can offer the students an excellent educa- tion. The courses available in the Math de- partment were basic arithmetic, con- sumer math, elementary algebra 1A-TB, Algebra 1-2, honors algebra, geometry and analysis. A fairly new math-related club spon- sored by this department is Mu Alpha Theta. its purpose is to tutor students who are having problems in math. The organization came to campus last year inviting students with a B average in algebra 3-4 to join. Academics 0 125

English Enhances Writing Skill The English Department's goals fo- cused on writing improvement, stu- dent participation, and the application of English skills in other programs. One ofthe primary goals, the improvement of writing skills, was stressed from the Freshman year through the Senior year. This goal extended writing assignments to the reading of literature. Student participation was utilized by having less lectures and more student involvement. Having students analyze and evaluate the literature was a tool that helped build critical-thinking skills, which will help them in adult life. The English Department was deeply in- volved in the improvement of teacher instruction that is sponsored by the dis- trict for all departments. Our depart- ment is appreciative to the district of- fice for its encouragement in the im- provement of instruction by having of- fered various courses in critical think- ing and in teacher improvement tech- niques, Mrs. Watson, head of the de- partment, said. Becoming an extension between other programs such as math, science, history, art, auto mechanics, P.E., and Home Ec. was a goal for which the Eng- lish Department aimed. Our language is the very soul of communications .. . how can we work effectively unless we all connect? Mrs. Watson asked. From reading and understanding lit- erature to writing compositions and re- ports, English is a major part of Stu- dents' lives today. Academics 127
