Special Needs Receive Attention Many different activities occured in Special Education. The classes collect- ed newspapers for the Lyon's Club and the school nurse. Some students were involved in junior Achievement through the Free Enterprise class. One very popular activity was the Special Olympics in which students competed with other students county and state wide in various events such as swimming and running events. Special Ed. students were also in- volved in the Special Service Sunshine, tthe S.S.S. clubl, a service club which prepared Special Ed. students to par- ticipate in regular school activities. The students completed three service pro- jects each year. Some were donating food to needy families and helping out with adults at the Westchester Home Centerg these activities benefitted both the community and the school. In the 5.5.5. Club, the students make and sell buttons for various events dur- ing the school year, said Mrs. Bobo. The Special Education class as a whole participated in a wide variety of events throughout the school year. Academics 3

W 1 in 'gt dl' Experience dds to Education With only one new teacher, Ms. Whitehead, the Math department was composed of many veterans. lt is a fairly large department, since students at Marcos are required to take math courses to graduate. As head of the Math department, Mr. Lassen is responsible for evaluating the Math teachers, ordering and bud- geting for the department, and assign- ing classes and rooms. Mr. Lassen said l'm very lucky in that I have great teachers to work with. The math de- partment is very experienced and can offer the students an excellent educa- tion. The courses available in the Math de- partment were basic arithmetic, con- sumer math, elementary algebra 1A-TB, Algebra 1-2, honors algebra, geometry and analysis. A fairly new math-related club spon- sored by this department is Mu Alpha Theta. its purpose is to tutor students who are having problems in math. The organization came to campus last year inviting students with a B average in algebra 3-4 to join. Academics 0 125
