Senior hands are "accomplished hands" , In twelve years they have ac-
complished the task of obtaining an elementary and secondary education.
When we started the first grade in 1944 our hands were very tiny and inex-
perienced. Our teacher, Miss Dress, found that she had 24 pairs of hands to
guide along their first step in obtaining an education. Most of the time they
were quite dirty and they thought recess was so much more fun than arithmetic.
Our hands found it was quite a task learning to print and making that clumsy
pencil form the right letter. But as we progressed from year to year our hands
progressed also and before we knew it they had given up printing and were now
quite experienced at the art of writing. Penmanship wasn't the only thing our
hands were beginning to master. They had learned to add, subtract, multiply,
divide, pick out nouns and verbs, and do all sorts of other things .
By the year 1950, when we entered junior high, our hands were just about
the size they are now: however they weren't quite as skillful. After two years
of guidance under Mr. Bressler, our hands were ready to reach out for that all
important eighth grade diploma.
In the fall of 1952 our hands started on the last phase in their education at
Marathon School. They had a lot before them in the next four years and a lot
of new things to adjust to. Besides adjusting to some strange new subjects, our
hands found that they were quite busy participating in high school activities .
There were so many things to do such as --football, basketball, vocal and in-
strumental music, Student Council, Monocle Staff--that our hands never seemed
to have a quiet moment. 1
All these things that we have learned throughout the years have helped to
prepare our hands for the duties they will have to perform in the years before
us . The year we have waited for so long, 1956, has finally arrived. When our
hands reach out for our diplomas on graduation night we hope that they will be
ready for the future and capable of upholding our class motto.
