Tigers Capture Class AA South Championshi 5 ...J-xii Aka mx The Tigers came within one game of getting a shot at the state title. Marana's varsity won the AA South conference cham- pionship and got the home court advantage as they host- ed the divisional tournament winners CDO for position- ing at state. The Tigers came out ahead for the third time against CDO by lasting the Dorados 71-51. State quar- terfinals against Peoria was a breeze, but found it tough in the semifinals as they were humiliated by state runner up, Corona Del Sol 78-48, thus ending their chance for the state title. The Tigers had a great season, winning their first AA South conference championship with a record of ll-1, only losing to Nogales 56-54 in overtime, the overall season record was 19-4. Fleet Phillip got top honored as he was chosen captain of the AA South team, with Steve Watson and Gary Ward selected to the second team. l. X :Yagi Spirits Go High For JV Volleyball Although the junior varsity volleyball play- ers had a dissappointing season they still par- ticipated eagerly in the games. Though their record of 3-ll did not show it, the girls played hard and showed tough team effort. Coach Dave Holaway cut down the num- ber of JV players considerably from last year. These cuts enabled him to spend more time helping each girl with the fundamentals of volleyball, including passing, spiking and serving. There may not be many spots open on the varsity squad next year for these upcoming JV players, but there is always hope through hard work and practice. l.
