Matmen outscore big talent at invitational . was .. 'tw The Marana varsity wrestlers opened up their season by defeating Sahurarita 40-18. They then dropped their first AA conference match to San Manuel and went on to drop three more matches against Flowing Wells, Coolidge, and Saf- ford. Going out of their slump, the Tigers beat Globe by a score of 44-12. Marana's team went to the Flowing Wells Invita- tional Tournament to do an outstanding job by taking a fifth place in the overall team standings out of 22 schools. Marana placed five wrestlers in the tournament, Avery White C1211 placed sixth, Larry Walker C1345 placed third, Tim Grenfell 41405 took a sixth place, James Cisco q147J took a fifth, and Tom Henson CHWTJ took third. He also got an award for most pins. 1. Members of the varsity wrestling team are QFirst Rowj Craig Jackson, Randy White, Dane Smith, Larry Walker and Tim Grenfell. fSecond Rowj Vince Gacilios, Avery White, Rick Schrieve, James Cisco, Chuck Phillips and Mike Martinez. Freshman cagers open winning prep careers l -L S4 'J' if A successful year, of breaking into high school-level basketball, was spent by Marana's Kittens, under the direction of Coach Vi- debeck. The team worked at de- veloping the fundamental skills of basketball. What the team lacked in height, with the tallest player reaching only six foot, they made up in de- termination and speed. The use of a fast break scored the Kittens many points. The group had the potential to aid Coach Callicotte on next year's junior varsity. 1. Cubs show early power Marana's junior varsity wres- tling team started out by man- handling Sahuarita, 78-6. A three-game winning streak fol- lowed against San Manuel, 30- 24. Baboquivari, 75-6 and Sun- nyside, 38-27. Tough Flowing Wells and Coolidge brought the first losses to the Cubs. But they returned with conference victories against Safford, 46- 12, and Globe, 36-20. This sea- son the Cubs, under the coaching of Cliff Nystrom, have gained enough respect that next year they could be an ex- plosive team offering tough op- positions to other schools in the AA South conference. 1.
