Freshman cagers open winning prep careers l -L S4 'J' if A successful year, of breaking into high school-level basketball, was spent by Marana's Kittens, under the direction of Coach Vi- debeck. The team worked at de- veloping the fundamental skills of basketball. What the team lacked in height, with the tallest player reaching only six foot, they made up in de- termination and speed. The use of a fast break scored the Kittens many points. The group had the potential to aid Coach Callicotte on next year's junior varsity. 1. Pat Kelly jumps sky high to gain posses- sion ofthe ball for the Kittens. 2. Members of the freshman basketball team are CFirst Rowj Gene Lemme, Curt Parker and James Leal. Cubs struggle through mid season slum What appeared to be the begin- nings of an undefeated season, took a disasterous turn midway in the season when the Cubs en- countered a series of defeats starting with Globe, thus ending a nine-game winning steak. The Cubs entered this year's action with three returning mem- bers, forward Steve Watson, cen- ter Gary Ward and forward Clay Parsons. ln an attempt to regain the team's winning ways, Coach Calli- cotte changed the starting line-up to utilize the taller players, turn- ing the tide against Nogales. With this combination of return- ing players, Coach Callicotte has assembled another winning team. 1. Members of the JV basketball team are fFirst Rowj Jack White, Robert Amaro, Mike Romero, Chanito Lopez, Wade Lewis and Clay Parsons. fSecond Rowb Mr. Calli- cotte, Mark Robinson, Steve Watson, Gary Ward, Ronnie Tarkington, Arthur Scott, Brad Dewey and Ivan Grenfell. 2. Matmen outscore big talent at invitational . was .. 'tw The Marana varsity wrestlers opened up their season by defeating Sahurarita 40-18. They then dropped their first AA conference match to San Manuel and went on to drop three more matches against Flowing Wells, Coolidge, and Saf- ford. Going out of their slump, the Tigers beat Globe by a score of 44-12. Marana's team went to the Flowing Wells Invita- tional Tournament to do an outstanding job by taking a fifth place in the overall team standings out of 22 schools. Marana placed five wrestlers in the tournament, Avery White C1211 placed sixth, Larry Walker C1345 placed third, Tim Grenfell 41405 took a sixth place, James Cisco q147J took a fifth, and Tom Henson CHWTJ took third. He also got an award for most pins. 1. Members of the varsity wrestling team are QFirst Rowj Craig Jackson, Randy White, Dane Smith, Larry Walker and Tim Grenfell. fSecond Rowj Vince Gacilios, Avery White, Rick Schrieve, James Cisco, Chuck Phillips and Mike Martinez. CThird Rowj Coach Bob Newman, Russel Barker, Dan Ramsey, Tom Henson, Mitchel Anders and Ed Matchette. 2. Marana wrestlers do exercises before starting practice. 3.
