Tigers falter early in divisional tourney The Tigers ended an exciting winning sea- son in Nogales when they lost to Douglas by a score of 61-60 in second round divisionals. The final score tells the story of the whole game as the gap never went higher than eight points, with the score being tied at 30 during halftime. The Tigers did well in conference play, as they defeated Flowing Wells, San Manuel and Safford twice. Although they dropped both contests with Canyon Del Oro, they did split meetings with Nogales, Douglas and Globe. Marana finished in a tie for third with Douglas in the AA South finishing with a 9-5 conference record and a 13-6 overall record. James Taylor, who led the Tigers in scor- ing, was named to the first team all-confer- ence squad. Making the second team was Le- roy Berry. Honorable mention went to Billy Combs, Danny Harry and Fleet Phillips. 1. Coach Acker explains calmly what has to be done. 2. Carl Lee demonstrates excellent shooting form. 3. ough competitors trouble female cagers Final scores were not always a good mea- sure of the quality of basketball played by the varsity girls this year. Following two days of tough games they came out second to a powerful Caballero team at the Flowing Wells Christmas tournament. Early confer- ence games ended in close, heart-breaking defeats including one to Flowing Wells, a po- tential state champion, by a one point differ- ence. Another game to Canyon del Oro also brought a one-point loss with unending hus- tle. Honor came at the season's close when leading vorer Kim Dobbie was named to Class ..,+ South All-Conference second team. Small, hut quick, describes the girls' junior varsity cagers, under Coach Antonik. The girls spent long hours developing fundamen- tal skills in preparation for future basketball seasons. 1.
