:xl-f mass History M Last Friday during our noon hour some of us kids were dreadzing the thought of leaving, after twelve long years, of studying, playing, fighting, joking, giving the teachers a bad time, and working as a class together. It seems ages ago since Bernetta Drollinger with her long curls, John Peckham in his drop seat coveralls, Charlie Davis with his bangs, Harold Skip Mason in his knee pants, Alice Netz in her short dresses, Keith Ellingson with his tow-hair, Lois Rice with her long bangs, and myself, Barbara Hunzicker, were among the few who entered as first graders at Mapleton Grade School. No more of the present graduating class came until the fifth grade when Pat Holman with her round gold-'rimmed glasses, Joyce Beers with her fiery temper, Vadis Miller with her long Rraids, Joann Hoyt with her shyness, and Sam McCain, the strong, Silent type, joined us. Then in the sixth grade, barefooted Jack Jenkins became a member of our class. In the seventh grade, we gained a. heart-breald.ng Roberta Akers. In the eighth grade, bashful Jane Pearson enrolledg and I must not forget Nancy Loomis with her long black braids, who enrolled that year also. In the year 19147, thirty-one bold but determined freshmen entered high school. As we look back on the year we entered MHS, we find that we have accomplished a great task. There may have been brain-racking moments, but there were also joyful ones. Later on in the year, Ger- aldine DuVal fran Elmira High School joined our class. Much to our embarrassment on initiation day the girls had to come to school dressed in pajamas turned wrong side out and blouses of gunnyf- sacks. We carried high-heeled shoes in a. bucket. We wore our hair in five pigtails tied with green ribbons. The boys were dressed in girls' dresses worn inside out with hair ribbons around their heads. They carried in a pail shoes which were too big for them. There were a number of things which IB had to bring. Among them were a baby rat- tle and a pole with a string and a pin on the end. Much to our dis- appointment, we did not have to use them. After our much dreaded initiation, we settled down to a year's learning, The sophomores gave a welcome party which made us feel a little better. After being lclcked around for a year, we finally became sophomores. That year we gained Lola Cessnun from Klamath Falls and Jack Ashburner from Skykomish, Washington. We got the joy of initiat- ing the freshmen. We feft a little sorry for them, so we gave them a welcome party, too.

It was held here at the high school. We decorated the Library in blue and silver with blue iris. Afterwards, we had movies. Now we are on the last leg of our journey. This year we gained Don Snell, a tall, lanky fellow from Cascade Locks, Oregon. 'Ihere will be twenty--one graduating in June. We took over the coke machine at the beginning of this year. The proceeds will go to finance our Senior Skip. We are planning on a trip to San Francisco-a Qminatown tour, a harbor tour, a trip to Stan- ford University, and other interesting places. 7?
