BUT No more pencils, no more books! However this is not the true slogan for those of us who are planning a teaching career, as the books and pencils will always be a necessity in our lives. Our Maple Heights chapter of the FTA is one club in which we can have fun and also help the school when we are needed. We future teachers enjoy the opportunity of substituting in various classes whenever we can. In doing so, we find out for ourselves whether or not we are qualified to be a teacher. The first Monday of each month, our ofiicers, Carolyn Flad, President, Todd Clark, Vice Pres- ident, Lee Ann Phillips, Secretary, and Peggy Palumbo, Treasurer, meet and plan the next meet- ing, which is held on the second Tuesday of the month. Our advisor, Mrs. Delma Lee Paulman, offers suggestions and words of advice when they are needed. On the first Thursday of each month, two of us attend District Meetings held in the Board of Education Building in downtown Cleveland. Occasionally, there are State Meetings in Columbus, which we also attend. During Teachers' Week, which is in the spring, each FTA member has a chance to teach. Those of us interested in teaching elementary school have our choice of school and grade, and those of us interested in teaching high school may choose our subject. Two days are spent at these schools. The first day is devoted to observing and the second day is our day to shine as a teacher. Later, at our next monthly meeting, we share our experiences. These experiences give us an insight into the teaching profession.

The name of our club is the Maple Heights High School junior Council on VVorld Affairs. XVhew! Vile just nicknamed it the junior Council. I learned a lot from the junior Council meetings. I learned a bit of understanding about the various people of the world. It's true, I appreciate the problems of the world a little bit more. The slide pictures Mr. Podway took on his trip to Europe were certainly informative. The meeting when they were shown was one ofour best. And it was a kind ofjolt, when he told us that he had booked passage on the Andrea Doria, but had cancelled his ticket. I remember when the speaker from the British Consulate in Cleveland came to speak about British Schools and about the Suez crisis. He was Vice Consul, too. A very important man to be at Maple Heights High School! The new tenth grade members and some of the eleventh grade members, ofour junior Council were able to attend a conference at YVestern Reserve. They saw movies and had a discussion on India. That too, I heard, was very interesting. But, to me, the most interesting activity ofour club was the mock United Nations meeting at Lincoln High School. VVe had fun representing other nations, and thinking and talking as they would think and talk. VVe each tried to pass an agenda, that would guide the United Nations' policies. At the end of the discussions, there was a general assembly at which the agendas were read and the countries voted on whether to pass or reject them. I sure wish I could have been one of the lucky members of the club, who went to visit the U. N. build- ing in New York or the World Affairs Council in Cincinnati. VVowl What fun, good experience too! The Rotary Club of Maple Heights helped our club finance the trips. As I sit back and think about this past year, I realize that the junior Council really accomplished alot. ROVV 1-C. Palker, T. Clark, K. Green, C. Sliwinski, A. Beamer. ROVV 2-S. Gunya O R GOAL - - UNITED NATIONS HOME EC., OUR FUTURE I Ijust arrived home from a Home Fc. meeting! We meet two Wednesdays a month and our advisor is our Home Economics teacher, Miss Pearl Katowitz. Learning to become a homemaker is the real purpose of our club. During the year we take part in many activities and work at various projects. Mak- ing Christmas jewelry is one of the projects we enjoy very much and we put our selling ability to good use by selling Christmas cards. The hospitals appreciate the Thanks- giving favors our club makes for them. Serving at school banquets is one event we all look forward to each year. Vie sponsor The Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow test for all senior girls who are thinking of becoming homemakers. Perhaps you have attended our Twirp dances in previous years-you know, the girls ask the boys. Also, our active members look forward to our annual picnic at the end of the school year Being '1 real homemaker is the secret desire of any girl 'md by joining our club while in high school you can put into daily practice all that you have learned ll you are in the tenth through twelfth grades and enjoy eating cooking, sewing or doing my of these normal daily functions, this is the club for you Par left. Active members add Hnishing touches to their Christmas corsages. Lefl: ROW I-P. Sondej, B. Kail. ROW 2-C. Mraz, M. Langshaw.
