Suddenly, a feminine laugh ripples across the room. Another youthful face actually holds back a tear, as the hero and heroine are separated in a love novel, but we know that they will be united in the last chapter. A boy in the front seat grits his teeth and clenches his fists as he gets into the mood of a bloody battle, or a mob fight. Another boy sprawls over his desk vainly scratching his head in an attempt to solve a blood curdling mystery. A vocabulary test occupies the entire attention of a composition class. Pencils scratch, feet shuflie, and all around is that uneasy feeling. Another question is asked, and shouts are heard: We didnlt have that, or, You didn't tell us to learn that, by pupils who forgot to study last night, as they try to dodge a tough question. When, Collect papers, is announced, hurried answers are written down 5 then, What Were the two verbs in the third? or, What is the difference between a compound and simple predicate? Speer! Test and All .llislriluuv Co1111.tcfl.' COMMERCE THE staccato clicking of typewriters produces Waves of sound as the fingers of many typists race over the keys. Long rows of future stenographers, intent faces evidencing the determination to train minds and fingers to act quickly and surely, practice earnestly in preparation for speed tests to come. The flying fingers of the students dance over the keys set upon the goal of sixty Words per minute. In another class, there is the low mutter of disturbed voices as sheets of yellow paper are given to each person. Gloomy faces bend for a last minute over texts, the Word test sweeps around the room. There is a hush as the teacher dictates Word after Word, While alert minds try to translate the Words into shorthand. A commerce class down in the basement is a Waving sea of hands, and stormy answering of questions. A lively discussion rages on investments, loans, and budgets, as pupils attempt to figure the rate of interest they Will have to pay. These imply that the person who is able to conserve his energies, who is best trained for his job, and who is physically fit, will succeed. The mechanical features of stream- lining have compelled the individual to organize his life in such a manner that speed and efficiency may be attained.
