A rtisls In Metal INDUSTRIAL ARTS A DEAFENING roar greets us as we enter the school machine shop. A blast furnace melts a piece of metal, which is then shaped, and again be- comes solid and firm. The endless slapping of belts, pounding and whining of machines makes a ceaseless bedlam, but all the while useful and beautiful articles are made. A warning bell rings and all machines groan to a stop, silence reigns throughout. The odor of freshly cut lumber fills the atmosphere as a whistling saw parts a board. The vibration of powerful motors rocks the room as the odor of hot glue fills the air. Many pieces of beautifully made furniture await the finishing touch. In another room, a printing press rolls tirelessly. The pungent smell of ink permeates the air. Meanwhile, a large stack of programs take form. Stillness-ghostly quiet, is the atmosphere of a mechanical drawing class. The slight movement of a T square or triangle is heard as students construct fine blue prints. . - I . J C jflssn ART HE ioom 1S lined With White and graceful Greek statues coloi ful pictures and pai tly finished posteis advertising the advantages of an M A P The sound of charcoal rustling nervously over paper fills the air In the center of the room a g1rl poses and at he1 feet a student measures paper for a poster. We peek into a little room at the Slde and see more pupils sitting on high stools working with clav The clay grows swiftly into beautiful and graceful shapes under the skillful fingers of the modelers A boy s1ts at a Window drinking 1n the sparkling autumn scenery He dabbles a brush in paint and spreads the colors harmoniously over the rough suiface of the paper His ha11 falls into his eyes-he does not pause to brush it away but paints on unnoticing. At last he pauses With a contented sigh the picture 1S done During another period the students pour diligently over great volumes, drinking in the lives of Michael Angelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Titian, marveling at their Works.
