f V IN MEMORY OF JULIE M BURFIELD Julie entered the world on September 28, 1965 and left us October 25, 1987. She was an honor graduate of Elkland Area High School, 1983. While here at Mansfield University she was a football cheerleader and worked as a student secretary at the Education and Personnel Office. Although her college years started in the field of music she discovered her incredible love for children. She was to graduate January 9, 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in early childhood development. She did her student teaching at Carder Elementary In Corning, NY and the Calvin Smith Elementary School in Painted Post. Julie will never be forgotten by the people whose lives she touched. Her outgoing personality, overflowing energy, and her love for life will never be forgotten. Cherish these memories.

n LETTER TO THE CARONTOWAN My personal library includes 25 editions of The Caronfowan. I refer to them often, whenever I persue them I find my- self spending more time doing this than I thought I would. As I began to prepare this statement for the 70th anniversary edition, I selected several Caronfowan ' s for review. As I looked and read I also reminisced. I saw pictures of students whom I needed to remember. I found pictures of faculty members who have gone from Mansfield, never to return, and some who may. I was reminded of campus organizations that once flourished and then declined or disappeared. I recognized other organizations that continue, and indeed qualify to be called traditional. I saw buildings being constructed that now look as if they have always been part of our campus. I also saw buildings that appeared old twenty-five years ago, and look the same today. I noticed certain athletic teams that enjoyed great success in one time period only to fall on hard times, and then return to prominence. The Caronfowan enabled me to witness an entertainment menu that changed from big bands, to rock concerts, to small groups. Formals gave way to mixers , to socials, and to dinner-dances held off campus. I was reminded of different preferences in clothing and in hair styles. Long hair, short hair, crew cuts, and the natural look. Skirts and sweaters, blue jeans, penny loafers, short shorts, bermudas, slacks, sneakers, and sweat shirts all passed in review, with each generation absolutely satisfied with their look. My infatuation with year books runs rampant. When I look at them I take a long look, and when I write about them, I tend to get carried away remembering all those people who were and still are Mansfield. However, in my defense, every yearbook represents an anniversary for that class, and anniversaries are always appropriate times for reminiscence. I ' ve done that! I wish to congratulate The Caronfowanon its 70th birthday. I also wish to congratulate the members of our Class of 1988. You have been good to Mansfield. Students are the core of our existence. We appreciate what you have given us; we applaud the success you have earned. A translation of the Indian term caronfowan is little village on top of the hill . You will always be part of that village. Sincerely, ROD C. KELCHNER President Intro 7
