She was an honor graduate of Elkland Area High School, 1983. While here at Mansfield University she was a football cheerleader and worked as a student secretary at the Education and Personnel Office. Although her college years started in the field of music she discovered her incredible love for children. She was to graduate January 9, 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in early childhood development. She did her student teaching at Carder Elementary In Corning, NY and the Calvin Smith Elementary School in Painted Post. Julie will never be forgotten by the people whose lives she touched. Her outgoing personality, overflowing energy, and her love for life will never be forgotten. Cherish these memories. THEN AND NOW 6 Intro n LETTER TO THE CARONTOWAN My personal library includes 25 editions of The Caronfowan. I refer to them often, whenever I persue them I find my- self spending more time doing this than I thought I would. As I began to prepare this statement for the 70th anniversary edition, I selected several Caronfowan ' s for review. As I looked and read I also reminisced. I saw pictures of students whom I needed to remember. I found pictures of faculty members who have gone from Mansfield, never to return, and some who may. I was reminded of campus organizations that once flourished and then declined or disappeared. I recognized other organizations that continue, and indeed qualify to be called traditional. I saw buildings being constructed that now look as if they have always been part of our campus. I also saw buildings that appeared old twenty-five years ago, and look the same today. I noticed certain athletic teams that enjoyed great success in one time period only to fall on hard times, and then return to prominence. The Caronfowan enabled me to witness an entertainment menu that changed from big bands, to rock concerts, to small groups. Formals gave way to mixers , to socials, and to dinner-dances held off campus. I was reminded of different preferences in clothing and in hair styles. Long hair, short hair, crew cuts, and the natural look. Skirts and sweaters, blue jeans, penny loafers, short shorts, bermudas, slacks, sneakers, and sweat shirts all passed in review, with each generation absolutely satisfied with their look. My infatuation with year books runs rampant. When I look at them I take a long look, and when I write about them, I tend to get carried away remembering all those people who were and still are Mansfield. However, in my defense, every yearbook represents an anniversary for that class, and anniversaries are always appropriate times for reminiscence. I ' ve done that! I wish to congratulate The Caronfowanon its 70th birthday. I also wish to congratulate the members of our Class of 1988. You have been good to Mansfield. Students are the core of our existence. We appreciate what you have given us; we applaud the success you have earned. A translation of the Indian term caronfowan is little village on top of the hill . You will always be part of that village. Sincerely, ROD C. KELCHNER President Intro 7 Quick! What ' s the name of this book? if you hod to look at the front cover shame on you! Read on for an articie so interesting and informative that you will never again forget the name of your yearbook. 8 Intro A typical phone conversation tneard in fhe Car- onfawan office: Hello. This is Deb Johnson from the Caronfawan ... The what? The Caronfawan. What ' s that? The yearbook. Intro 9 Carontawan. A wonderful name for a wonderful book. 10 Intro wi srF-r- It is a name that many ML) students either forget or mispronounce, though, and we, the Caronfawan Staff, feel that you, the MU student, should l now the correct name and pronunciation of your year- book. After all, you o ivoks remember the name of the Bible, don ' t you? And you never call it the Bib- ble , do you? Intro 1 1 Ask a random group of MU students the name of ttieir yearbook and the answers range from, I don ' t know, to various pronunciations of Car- onfawan. the most popular being everybody ' s favorite femaie student — Karen Tawan. ( 12 Intro . j 4 Let ' s get it straight. Karen has nothing to do with the yearbook. She ' s not even enrolled at this schooi. We checked, Intro 13 So, here it is, plain and simple, the proper pronuncia- tion of Carontawan, syllable by syllable: Co-(as in car); ron-{as in Ronald); fa-(as in ta da!); and wan- (as in wander). Put them all together and you have Carontawan— a wonderful name for a wonderful book. 14 Intro Now that you know what it is and how to say it, you are ready to quiz your friends over Sunday brunch to find out how good their memories are and if they really read this article. I was privileged enough to have en- joyed a class with each of these fine men. Dr Tillinghast and Mr Dick will be greatly missed by all whose lives they touched. I walked into the theatre class that was taught by Dr Tillinghast knowing virtually nothing about the theatre. However, when I left at the end of the semester I knew a great deal more about the theatre and also more about myself. Dr Tillinghast had a sense of humor and a talent for teaching. He made the theatre sound like a new adventure with each class. I am gold that I had the opportunity to get to know Dr Tillinghast. Mr Dick taught the Voice class I was enrolled in. To Mr Dick singing was more than merely being able to sing. Singing for him was something that came from deep within. He didn ' t just hand you a piece of music and say sing it. He ex- plained what you were trying to sing. He helped me in that when he was done explaining what I was attempting to sing I saw the song in a different light. He was an excellent teacher who put forth 1 10% of himself into his teaching methods. Mansfield University has lost two very fine men who enlightened many students. Mr Dick and Dr Tillinghast will live on in the memories of those who had the chance to know and learn from them. Thank you for your dedication. The memories of you will live on forever. 214 As I sit and contemplate the exact words to describe Miss Gorrity, I find it to be impossible. She was a woman so great in her values, beliefs, and attitudes that no word would do her justice. Miss Garrity saw many students pass through Mansfield, but she still had encouragement for every new freshman. She never lost faith in me long after I myself had given up. Whether it was a failure or an accomplishment she was there with praise and suggestions to help improve it. Miss Garrity made me reach inside myself and search for something I did not know existed, and just when I thought I had found it, she added a whole new dimension. I am not trying to make her seem godlike or infallible in any way, but I am just trying pass on a small piece of a lady many people will never get to know. Not everyone liked her, and many times it was because she expected so much of her students. Many times she could see qualities in people that they could not see themselves. She always wanted students to strive farther than necessary, or to go that extra mile. Miss Garrity; the name brings back a flood of memories, Mansfieldland, I don ' t hear anything, is someone talking, where is that new voice! Friends, Romans, Countrymen, you can do it, don ' t say I can ' t and main-tain-ance just to name a few. So this is to memories, may they burn long and sweet in those of you who were fortunate enough to know her. To those of you who missed the opportunity remember, do not settle for just okay; reach within; find the strength; and strive for excellence. To you Miss Garrity I say, you will be replaced on the staff, but you are nonreplaceable. Thanks for the memories, we miss you. -JILL KEMP If there is one thing I have learned from the Mansfield experience, it ' s that it is difficult to make it alone. Some days go by without anyone to talk to. I remember many sleepless night, sitting up staring out of my dorm window looking at the lights in town. It ' s pretty peaceful. Last semester was a terrible blow to me. There was this woman I would often go to visit when I was in my low points. She would listen but would eventually say, You ' ll get no sympathy here. Just go out and do something about it! She was right. Self-sufflcience is what college is all about. You have to take core of yourself to be accepted by others. Seems that every time she spoke there was a lesson to be learned. It ' s funny how a person can effect the course of your life by testing you this way. Most took great offense to her challenges. You see, the college student of to- day doesn ' t like to 1) be told they are wrong; 2) have to work hard to get a good grade; 3) or meet someone who believes that the only acceptable way to live is to attain your full potential, which too many of us do no. She forced you to learn more about yourself. Most often, she was very disappointed when you did not. It was sad to see her the way I did the last time. The spirit was there, but the body was slipping away. She wanted me to leave but I wouldn ' t. I sat there, fighting the tears, watching an idol reduced to mere mortality. We reminisced and laughed, but she grew faint. I said I would be back to visit. She was the most profound influence on my collegiate life. Until October, I couldn ' t imagine the strength she possessed. She molded, shaped, challenged an entire generation. Loved or hated, she was respected. I won ' t see her again, but hopefully a part of her lives within me. I loved her. A coach, a friend, an agitator, a minstrel. Goodbye, Miss Garrity. I miss you. -BRYAN LANE 215 216 Conclusion Another year has slipped away, Where has the time gone? It seems just yesterday we were moving in for the fall semester. Now spring finals are over. Yeah! A lot has happened this year. Many changes have come about. Times have changed since the first yearbook was printed in 1918. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Caronfawan, and I feel like I ' ve been here for the past 70 years. I have tried to represent these past 70 years by reproducing pictures from previous issues. As you turn the pages of this yearbook I hope it brings back as many fond memories of MU as it does for me. When I look through these pages, I think of the early morning donut runs, eating cold pizza at 4 am, the long hours of hard work, the deadlines I o mosf made, and of course, my zany staff. There was never a dull moment at the office. I would like to congratulate the graduating seniors. I hope that you are successful in your future endeavors. Remember that college education does not end once you graduate. I hope that you will use your experiences from MU to better yourself in the future. I would like to thank Larry McCullen, of Jostens Publishing, and Abe Orlick, of Davor Photography, for their help this year. I would also like to thank my staff, especially Lynn, Tom, Christian, Joan, and Mr. Moresco, our advisor, for all their ext ra help. I ' d like to specially thank Christian Hoy and Amy Sullivan of the Flashlight o their willingness to do- nate pictures. If it weren ' t for them much of this book would be incomplete. Remember, cherish the memories for they live forever.
