Colonel Joseph S. Hoard and Dr. Joseph P. Morris, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, set in motion what was to become Mansfield Classical Seminary (1856-1857), Mansfield Normal School (1858-1927), Mansfield State Teach- er ' s College (1960-1983), and will soon be- come Mansfield University of Pennsylvania of the State System of Higher Education. What Colonel Hoard and Dr. Morris began back in 1858-the rich traditions and high educational standards-are what we are cele- brating this year during Mansfield ' s 125th Anniversary. The first building on campus was South Hall, not the same South Hall that we are familiar with today, the first South Hall burned to the ground in 1857. It was rebuilt and en- larged in 1858 when Mansfield Normal School opened. Work began on North Hall in 1873 and was completed the following year. Over the years, additions have been built on the original structure of North Hall as it was modernized, but bascially it is the same North Hall that has been with us since 1874. How ironic it is that it will be this year, (Mansfield ' s 125th), that we will be saying goodbye to our old friend, the building that has been with us the longest, North Hall. As the years go by, things certainly do change. Old South Hall was torn down and replaced with Old Alumni Hall which was in turn, torn down and replaced with the new Alumni Hall which today houses our library and administration offices as well as class- rooms. Mansfield Junior High became Allen Hall and Mansfield Elementary became what we know now as Retan Center. Mans- field Athletcis were moved from Smythe Park to the new fields near where Decker Gymnasium stands, and the Gymnasium stands, and the Gymnasium became today ' s Recreation Center. As dormitories became classrooms and of- fices, new spaces was needed to house the students. The result of this was Pinecrest Manor in 1962, fo llowed by Hemlock Manor in 1964. As the school grew in enrollment, Maple Hall and Laurel Manor A were added in 1967, following by Laurel Manor B in 1969. The most recent additon to student housing has been Cedarcrest Manor which was built in 1976, bringing the total capacity of the on- campus dormitories to 2,042 students. Not all of our buildings have undergone dra- matic changes. Belknap Hall still houses classrooms and faculty offices, and Straughn Auditorium still holds theatrical productions as well as guest speakers, muscial and dance performances here on campus. Other buildings have come to take their place in Mansfield college life. Buildings with names like Manser, Memorial, De cker, Doane, Grant, Richards House, Butler Cen- ter, and Beecher House, These buildings have become a part of Mansfield and will make their particlular make on those stu- dents who have, and those students who will also become a part of Mansfield. After all, the history of Mansfield Unviersity of Pennsylvania and Mansfield State collge, and Mansfield State Teacher ' s College, and Mansfield Normal School, is not just the his- tory of the buildings that have stood here on this hill. It is the history of the people who have lived and laughed, worked and learned, and succeeded and failed within the walls of those buildings. It is easy to recount the history of the phys- ical structure of this college, but the true history is the story of the changes that we all have endured throughout time. The Car- ontawan is a pactoral record of the changes that have occ ured in those people who have passed through Mansfield on their way to something else. That, something else is history, itself. Because isn ' t the history of Mansfield the history of this Common- wealth, this country, and this world? It is this which we are celebrating in this, the 125th year of Mansfield as an institiution of higher learning. Through those people, the administration, the faculty, those involved in related support servicesc and the students themselves, the ideas that have carried Mansfield through 125 years of existence, will perpetuate through those who have been within these walls and all of those who have yet to come here to continue the history of Mansfield. 11 12 13 14 15 n 16 C. I hope each of you looks forward at this time with enthusiasm and excitement to taking charge of your life and making it valuable and meaniful to yourself and to those you encounter. Believe it or not, it is relatively easy to be optimistic, purposefully oriented, and future oriented on Commencement Day. In future years, as you read this volume you will recognize the values and insights your years at Mansfield have brought to your life. Your professors and the staff at Mansfield will have a share in the fruitfulness of your life. Each of us here at Mansfield have also benefited from knowing you. What I, and am sure all of us, hope is that your enthusiasm, cause of purpose and commitment to human values will not be lessened in the slightest but rather be strengthened by interaction with the realities of our world.
